About this opportunity
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 is soliciting applications for the 2024 Region 4 Sustainable Materials Management Grants competition. Eligible applicants include state, local, tribal, and non-profit organizations. Projects must address at least one of two sustainable materials management (SMM) priorities: addressing municipal recycling markets in Region 4 or strategies for preventing food loss and waste. Applicants must select at least one technical assistance method such as research, investigation, experiments, education, training, studies, or demonstration of innovative techniques. All projects must take place within EPA Region 4, which covers Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The application deadline is December 2, 2024, and awards are expected to be made by July 1, 2025.
EPA Region 4 anticipates awarding approximately $250,000 for 2-4 grants ranging from $50,000 to $125,000. The grants will be issued and managed under EPA's Solid Waste Management Assistance Grants program (CFDA 66.808), with a focus on reducing environmental impacts, conserving resources, and supporting more sustainable and cost-effective waste management practices.

Specifically, the term "rural" is being removed to clarify that the competition is not being limited to only rural communities. The amended language now reads as follows: "In order to address this challenge, EPA is soliciting projects that will encourage collaboration and coordination across Region 4 geographies, organizations, and/or businesses to enhance rural recycling systems, making them stronger and more agile to address changing materials markets.
