About this opportunity
The U.S. Geological Survey issued a notice of intent on July 23, 2026 to award a sole-source purchase order to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego for X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis of split sediment cores, with quotations due August 3, 2026 at 1500 PST. USGS considers Scripps the only source capable of producing the required high-quality geochemical data; data comparability and consistency with prior work are critical to the project's success. The work involves scanning approximately 70 split sediment cores at 1mm intervals to detect light and medium atomic weight elements for paleoseismic research distinguishing earthquake-triggered sediment density flows from flood-related deposits. Cores were collected from lakes in Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington. Performance occurs at the contractor's facility from September 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, with results deliverable within 60 days of core receipt. The final number of cores will be determined through consultation between USGS researchers and lab personnel. Although this is a notice of intent under RFO FAR Part 12 (Commercial Products and Services), all responsible parties may submit quotations; the Government retains sole discretion to compete or proceed with the sole-source award. Quotations must be submitted electronically to yangzhi_deng@ios.doi.gov. NAICS code is 541380 (Testing Laboratory).
