About this opportunity
The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) is seeking to procure a high-quality, scientific research-grade scanning tunneling microscope (STM) system with extensive technical specifications. The procurement is currently in a sources sought phase, which is designed to gather information from potential contractors about their capabilities to meet the precise technical requirements. The STM system must include complex features such as a load/lock chamber, ion getter and Ti sublimation pump, radiative sample heating, differential pumping chambers, optical microscope, quadrupole mass analyzer, and precise scanning capabilities with temperature ranges from 50K to 650K. Interested parties are required to submit a comprehensive capabilities package demonstrating their ability to meet the salient characteristics, including providing their Unique Entity Identification number, CAGE Code, and System for Award Management (SAM) expiration date. Responses must be submitted electronically to tammy.martin.6@us.af.mil by March 7, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. Mountain Standard Time.
The procurement is designated as a total small business set-aside under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code 334516 for Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing, with a size standard of 1,000 employees. While no specific award value is mentioned, the contract will involve the delivery of one STM system to the USAF Academy located in Colorado Springs, CO 80840. Contractors must be registered in the System for Award Management (SAM) database at www.sam.gov to be eligible. The solicitation requests additional information such as estimated delivery time, manufacturing location, and any pre-priced government contract vehicle information. The technical specifications indicate a sophisticated scientific instrument with precise measurement capabilities, including a scanning range of 10 μm x 10 μm x 1 μm and a tip positioning range of 10 mm in x, y, z directions using piezo motors.
