About this opportunity
The Department of the Air Force Materiel Command Lifecycle Management Center has published a Special Notice establishing a Qualified Products List (QPL) for MIL-DTL-85891, which covers Engineered Media Blast (EMB) products used for removing organic coatings. This initiative follows the recent publication of MIL-DTL-85891 Revision C on June 23, 2025, with additional modifications outlined in a continuation sheet dated July 22, 2025. The specification covers five types of engineered media including Urea Formaldehyde, Melamine Formaldehyde, Acrylic, Starch Polymer, and Multi-Plastic Chemical Blends used in abrasive blasting applications. The Air Force has contracted with the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) to conduct the initial round of qualification testing for vendors seeking to have their products added to the QPL. Products that successfully meet all requirements will be listed in the Qualified Products Database hosted at the Defense Logistics Agency website.
The primary objective of this notice is to establish a qualification process for EMB products that will ensure they meet stringent military specifications for paint and coating removal applications. Vendors have a critical deadline of thirty calendar days from the notice publication date (until August 22, 2025) to submit their products for testing to the Advanced Technology and Training Center in Warner Robins, Georgia. Contractors must provide at least 60 pounds of media, a 5" x 5" x 1" stock material sample for hardness testing, a certificate of conformity, safety data sheet, and contact information for their representative. The testing is funded by the Air Force for the first attempt, but vendors will bear the cost of retesting if their products fail to meet requirements. All contractors manufacturing EMB products covered under the five specified types are eligible to participate, and successful qualification will result in their products being added to the official QPL for future military procurement opportunities.
