About this file
This document is an Engineering Data List (AFLC Form 762) containing amendments to MIL-DTL-85891C dated 23 June 2025, specifically modifying technical specifications for Engineered Media Blast (EMB) products. The amendments include changes to iron content requirements, sample preparation procedures, specific gravity measurements, and testing methodologies for different media types, with precise adjustments to preparation steps, temperature settings, chemical digestion processes, and density verification using instruments like the Mettler Toledo Density Meter.
The modifications provide detailed technical guidance for manufacturers seeking qualification on the Qualified Products List (QPL), outlining specific testing protocols for various media types (Types II, III, V, VII, and VIII) with precise requirements for specific gravity, particulate testing, and sample preparation. Vendors must submit 60 pounds of media, a stock material sample, a certificate of conformity, safety data sheet, and contact information to the Advanced Technology and Training Center in Warner Robins, GA for qualification testing, with the understanding that unsuccessful submissions will require retesting at the vendor's expense.

Page 9, Note 4: Change to read as follows: “Mixture B for light particulates: subtract 0.10 from the minimum specific gravity of the finished product.”
Page 15, Para 4.6: Delete step e: “After weighing, the sample should be covered with a crucible lid to prevent loss of material and moisture absorption.”
Page 15, Para 4.6: Change step g to read as follows: “To ash the sample, the crucible shall be placed in a muffle furnace at 850 °C (1560 °F) for 30 minutes.”
Page 16, Para 4.6: Change step h to read as follows: “Remove the crucible from the muffle furnace and allow it to cool in a safe, heat-resistant area.”
Page 16, Para 4.7. and 4.7.2: Change to read as follows:
“4.7.1 Sample preparation.
a. Under the fume hood, set the hot plate at a temperature of 95 ±5 ℃ (203 ±9 °F).
b. Using a scale, tare out the weigh boat, weigh 1-2 grams of media, and record weight to the nearest 0.01g.
c. Transfer the media to a 50 mL sample tube and, using a pipette, add 2 mL on nitric acid (HNO3). Slowly mix the contents, place the sample tube on the hot block, and cover with a disposable watch glass.
d. Let the sample digest for 10-15 minutes.
e. Allow the sample to cool for five minutes and add another 4 mL of nitric acid.
f. Let the sample digest for 30 minutes.
g. Add 3mL of hydrogen peroxide and let the media digest for 10 more minutes to start peroxide reaction.
h. Allow the sample to cool again for five minutes and add 5 mL of hydrochloric acid and let the media digest for 1 hour or until sample is completely digested.
i. Let the sample cool and dilute the digested product to the 50 mL mark using deionized (DI) water only.
4.7.2 Sample introduction and procedure.
NOTE: Detailed FAA operating instructions are not provided because of differences between
Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Instead, the analyst/operator shall follow the instructions provided by the OEM of the instrument.”
Page 19, Para 4.10.3: Modify to read as follows:
“a. Using a graduated cylinder, measure 200 mL of DI water in a 1000 mL beaker.
b. Place the 1000 mL beaker on the hot plate/stirrer and set rpm to 200.
c. Tare out a weight boat and weight 375 grams of LST powder crystal. Transfer contents into the 1000 mL beaker that contains the DI water.
d. Allow the mixture to stir for 5 minutes or until all solids have dissolved.
e. After 5 minutes, add 200 mL of acetone into the beaker. Make sure the mixture becomes homogeneous before taking measurement.
f. Adjust the specific gravity by adding LST powder crystal to increase specific gravity or acetone to decrease specific gravity.
g. Verify solvent mixture using the Mettler Toledo Density Meter or equivalent.”
“NOTE: Required Specific Gravity for Heavy Particulate Testing:
Media Type VII: 1.620-1.625”
Page 19, Para 4.10.4: Change step c to read as follows:
“If using mixture from 4.10.2 (LST Heavy Liquid) rinse the sieve and settled materials several times with DI water to remove excess of LST Heavy Liquid retained on the sieve. If using mixture from 4.10.3 (LST Heavy Liquid for Type VII) rinse the sieve and settled material several times with acetone to remove excess of LST Heavy Liquid retained on the sieve.”
Page 20, Para 4.10.6: Change to read as follows:
“NOTE: Required Specific Gravity for Light Particulate Testing:
Media Type II: 1.300-1.305
Media Type III: 1.370-1.375
Media Type V: 1.000-1.005
Media Type VIII: 1.260-1.265”
Page 20, Para 4.10.7: Change to read as follows:
