About this opportunity
NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey announced an Industry Week for the Sustainable Land Imaging (SLI) Commercialization Plan scheduled August 31 – September 4, 2026, at USGS Headquarters in Reston, Virginia, with registration extended to July 28, 2026. This is an informational engagement event, not a solicitation; no contract or competitive advantage results from participation, and the government will not reimburse costs.
The initiative envisions a commercially enabled model for Landsat-quality data delivery in which commercial providers supply multispectral, hyperspectral, and thermal imagery compatible with Landsat specifications; contribute to higher-order science product generation; and support calibration and validation infrastructure. NASA and USGS invite participation from Earth observation satellite operators and data providers, data analytics and product generation firms with demonstrated capabilities in Earth observation product generation and distribution, and ground-based calibration and validation instrument manufacturers capable of autonomous spectrometry and thermal radiometry.
The demonstration phase runs Fiscal Year 2027–2028, with three initial priority products anchoring workflow prototypes: Bathymetry, Surface Water Extent, and Burned Area and Burn Severity. The portfolio will expand to include Evapotranspiration and additional future products such as vegetation indices, snow and ice extent, and urban mapping.
The event consists of a half-day Community Briefing on Monday, August 31, open to all registered participants in-person or virtually, covering program overview and commercialization strategy. Tuesday through Friday feature by-invitation-only one-on-one deep-dive sessions addressing proposed architectures, technical capabilities, technology gaps, data analytics capabilities, calibration and validation instrumentation, and partnership models. Registration requires completion via Eventbrite by July 28, 2026, at 11:59 PM EDT. All participation is subject to restrictions on bilateral relationships with China per Section 526 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024. Contacts: Nima Pahlevan, NASA (nima.pahlevan@nasa.gov); Daniel W. Opstal, USGS (dopstal@usgs.gov).
