About this opportunity
The 187th Fighter Wing, operating under the Department of the Army Alabama Army National Guard, is conducting market research to procure F-35 compatible Map Lip Lights, which are mission-critical cockpit illumination components designed to enable pilots to read flight documents during night operations while maintaining visual acuity and minimizing aircraft detectability. The government is exploring the feasibility of a sole-source contract award and has issued this pre-solicitation notice to identify capable sources in accordance with Federal Acquisition Regulation Part 10 and policies regarding full and open competition. Key requirements for the Map Lip Lights include adherence to Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) compatibility standards, compliance with all F-35 program airworthiness, electrical, and material specifications, and seamless integration with the existing F-35 pilot oxygen mask and helmet assembly. This pre-solicitation notice is not a formal request for proposals, quotations, or bids, and the government does not intend to award a contract or compensate respondents based on information provided. Interested parties must submit responses by the March 18, 2026 deadline to be considered for the market research phase.
This procurement includes no set-aside designations and represents the government's intent to potentially award a sole-source contract to Gentex Corporation, the identified potential incumbent contractor. The notice does not specify an award value, budget range, or quantity of units required, as this market research phase is designed to validate whether competitive alternatives exist before finalizing the acquisition strategy. The posting was issued on March 11, 2026, and serves to satisfy the public notice requirements outlined in Procurement Guidance and Instructions (PGI) 206.103-170. Classified under NAICS 334310 (Audio and Video Equipment Manufacturing) and PSC 5831 (Intercommunication and Public Address Systems, Airborne), this procurement addresses specialized defense aviation equipment with stringent technical and integration requirements specific to fifth-generation fighter aircraft operations.
