About this opportunity
The US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) and other Department of Defense agencies are soliciting bids for a comprehensive contract to supply small laboratory research animals, including mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and gerbils. The Defense Health Agency is overseeing this procurement, which requires vendors to provide Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) animals that meet minimal essential characteristics (MEC) standards. Potential contractors must be AAALAC International or Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) accredited, demonstrating high-quality animal production facilities and practices. The solicitation emphasizes the need for a consistent and steady source of research animals to support basic research and Good Laboratory Practices/Food and Drug Administration (GLP/FDA) studies. The proposal response is due by April 15, 2025, with the opportunity initially posted on March 18, 2025, giving potential vendors approximately 28 days to prepare and submit their proposals.
The solicitation does not indicate a specific set-aside designation, meaning the opportunity is open to a broad range of qualified vendors. The contract is categorized under NAICS code 112990 (All Other Animal Production) and PSC code 8820 (Live Animals, Not Raised For Food), which provides additional context for the procurement's scope. While specific award values are not disclosed in the notice, the requirement for multiple animal species and support services suggests a potentially significant contract value. The place of performance will likely be various DoD research facilities where these animals will be used for scientific and medical research purposes. The emphasis on SPF animals and accredited vendor facilities indicates that the Defense Health Agency is prioritizing high-quality, scientifically validated research animal sources to support critical medical and infectious disease research initiatives.
