About this opportunity
The Department of the Navy Naval Sea Systems Command is soliciting contractor services to perform precision scraping on the bearing cap of the #3 Main Reduction Gear forward journal bearing aboard CVN 77 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The technical requirements include increasing the bearing pinch from 0.001 clear to 0.000-0.001 interference, achieving 75% overall contact inside the bolt pattern, and ensuring non-contact areas are distributed. Contractors will be required to work in accordance with specific naval drawings and recommendations, providing up to two contractors for an 8-hour shift Monday through Friday, with potential weekend work. The government will evaluate offers based on technical capability, price, and past performance, with technical and past performance being more heavily weighted in the assessment. The solicitation responses are due by May 29, 2025, with the work anticipated to be performed from August 29, 2025 to October 7, 2025.
The solicitation is not specifically set aside for any small business designation, despite the initial SF 1449 document indicating a Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) preference. The place of performance is Portsmouth, VA 23709, and contractors will need to obtain a Red badge Security Clearance and be prepared to work in the ship's engine room. The contract falls under NAICS category 336611 for Ship Building and Repairing and PSC category J020 for Maintenance/Repair/Rebuild of Ship and Marine Equipment. Contractors will be expected to provide their own materials and tooling, and the work will involve precise technical specifications for bearing cap scraping. Technical points of contact for the solicitation are Kevin Kretzer and Thomas Malloy from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, who can provide additional details about the contract requirements.
