Notice text
The proposed activity involves structural repairs and stabilization of Berths 1, 2A and 2B (Pier 1) including 75,000 square feet of in-shore portions between the berths at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) in Kittery, Maine. The proposed activity is intended to restore the full function of the pier by repairing unusable berthing facilities needed to support the shipyard’s primary mission of repairing and overhauling submarines.
Pier 1 is located on the western shoreline of the shipyard adjacent to dry dock 1. Berth 1, on the north side of the pier, is approximately 400 linear feet. Berths 2A and 2B, on the south side of the pier are approximately 675 linear feet. Pier 1 was constructed in phases between 1845 and 1907.
The pier is supported by a 1,300 foot long gravity type quay wall constructed of granite blocks set on the riverbed. The quay wall retains earthen fill supporting utilities, mooring fixtures, and railroad tracks.
