About this opportunity

The Department of the Army Materiel Command Army Contracting Command Aberdeen Proving Ground has issued a Request for Information (RFI) soliciting public feedback on a draft Military Detail specification document (MIL-DTL-32812) for militarized USB-C connectors designated as USB-CM. This is not a procurement action, but rather an opportunity for industry stakeholders to provide technical input on the government's proposed design and specification for environmentally hardened USB-C connections intended for use across Department of War applications. The specification covers cable and connector assemblies designed to operate reliably in extreme military environments including terrestrial, maritime, air, and space operational domains. Responses are due by June 13, 2026, and should be submitted to USB-CMilitary@army.mil in Microsoft Word or PDF format.

The objective of this RFI is to gather comprehensive feedback from manufacturers, vendors, and industry experts on the draft MIL-DTL-32812 specification to refine the design prior to finalization. The government seeks comments on connector design, manufacturability, product integration capabilities, cost implications, durability, corrosion resistance, material selections, and perceived limitations, with particular emphasis on design tradeoffs involving cost, data rate, power levels, and testing requirements. There are no specific eligibility restrictions for participation in this RFI, and all interested parties are encouraged to submit input. The specification establishes standards for USB-CM connectors supporting multiple data rates from USB 2.0 through USB 4.0 and power delivery ratings of 60W, 100W, and 240W, while incorporating comprehensive environmental and electrical testing requirements including temperature shock, immersion, vibration, humidity, salt fog, and electromagnetic compatibility testing per military standards.

Update #2 · Latest ·

THIS IS A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) ONLY.  This is not a Request for Quotation (RFQ), Request for Proposal (RFP) or an Invitation for Bid (IFB).

The Program Manager – Protection and Integration (PM-PI) is seeking feedback on a draft Military Detail document aka MIL-DTL on a new design for military connections.  This draft is subject to change based on relevant feedback and other developmental milestones of the program.

Militarized USB-C aka “USB-CM” is an environmentally hardened connection built to survive military environments.  The connector supports power and data requirements and supports USB standards unless specifically stated otherwise.  This government owned design is intended to provide a standard interface for military equipment and is not proprietary.  USB-CM is intended to provide a reliable and ruggedized standard connector for users across the Department of War in their deployed terrestrial, maritime: surface and sub-surface, air, and space operational environment(s).

PM-PI is looking for public feedback on the MIL-DTL document including, but not limited to: USB-CM connector design, manufacturability, ability to integrate into vendor products, cost considerations, any perceived limitations of use, durability and corrosion resistance, materials, etc.  It is encouraged that comments include tradeoffs in metrics, such as cost/data/design/testing as it relates to data rate and power levels.

Please send all comments to USB-CMilitary@army.mil.  MS word or PDF is the preferred format.

The draft MIL-DTL including design and detailed performance characteristics, can be found in the Attachments section of this posting.
