To support Operation IceBridge with the studying and monitoring of the changingareas if the Cryosphere, areas of frozen water, including the Earth's ice sheets and seaice glaciers. Operation IceBridge will use airborne platforms to maintain altimetry timeseries and monitor important areas of land ice and sea ice until the launch of NASA'snext satellite-lidar mission. Operation IceBridge will monitor the sea ice extent, snowcover on sea ice, ice sheet elevation, ice sheet sheet near surface firn to monitoraccumulation trend, ice sheet mass balance and the bed topography of the ice sheet usingairborne instruments.
Additionally Operation IceBridge will monitor larger glacier systems that are major orcould become major sources of sea level rise. UAF will use their Riegl LMS-Q240 PulsedScanning Altimeter, a laser altimeter capable of recording surface elevation data, andassociated Global positioning system (GPS) specially adapted for the UAF airplanes tocontinue their monitoring of the Alaskan glaciers that started in the 1990's.
This competitively awarded contract was issued on a cost-no fee basis, due to theresearch and development nature of the work, which is ill-suited to firm fixed pricing.

support in achieving the goals of Operation IceBridge. Operation State Universityof New York, Buffalo for support in achieving the goals of Operation IceBridge. OperationIceBridge is a data gap filler project between ICESat-1 (Ice, Cloud and Land ElevationSatellite 1) and ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite 2), which will not belaunched until the 2015 time frame. The goals of Operation IceBridge are to study andmonitor the changing areas of the Cryosphere, areas of frozen water, including theEarths ice sheets, sea ice and glaciers. Operation IceBridge will use airborne platforms to maintain altimetry time series andmonitor important areas of land ice and sea ice until the launch of NASAs nextsatellite-lidar mission. Operation IceBridge will monitor the sea ice extent, snow coveron sea ice, ice sheet elevation, ice sheet near surface firn to monitor accumulationtrends (firn is snow which has persisted through one melt season), ice sheet mass balance(the amount of mass contained within the ice sheet) and the bed (the interface betweenthe ice and the bedrock) topography of the ice sheet using airborne instruments.
The bed map, a map of the bed rock topography underneath the ice, is necessaryinformation for models predicting future ice sheet changes because it dictates how theice flows towards the sea. Along with the bed rock topography, the surface topography inthe form of digital elevation models (DEMs) of the ice sheet is needed to estimate thetotal mass of the ice sheet. This competitively awarded contract is for the processingof the high resolution Digital Mapping System (DMS) photogrammetric images collectedpreviously by Operation IceBridge aircraft campaigns and to develop algorithms to processthe DMS data in the future. It was issued on a firm fixed price basis.
