About this award

This federal contract award to The Research Foundation for the State University of New York (RF SUNY), valued at $39,216.00, is in support of NASA's Operation IceBridge 2010 campaign. The goal of Operation IceBridge is to study and monitor changes in the cryosphere, including ice sheets, sea ice, and glaciers, using airborne platforms to maintain altimetry data until the launch of NASA's next satellite-lidar mission, ICESat-2.

Under this contract, RF SUNY will provide expert advice and scientific expertise in photogrammetric processing of digital mapping system (DMS) camera data collected during the 2009 Antarctic IceBridge campaign. This includes quality control of the DMS images, generation of digital elevation models, and fusion of the DMS imagery with altimetry data. The contract does not have a set-aside designation.

Description

Recovery act funds purchase order for operation icebridge 2010 campaign photogrammetric processing of digital mapping system camera data. Recovery act funds purchase order for operation icebridge 2010 campaign photogrammetric processing of digital mapping system camera data. NASA goddard space flight center (GSFC) has a need to obtain support in achieving the goals of operation icebridge. Operation icebridge is a data GAP filler project between icesat-1 (ICE, cloud and land elevation satellite 1) and icesat-2 (ICE, cloud and land elevation satellite 2), which will not be launched until the 2015 time frame. The goals of operation icebridge are to study and monitor the changing areas of the cryosphere, areas of frozen water, including the earth S ICE sheets, sea ICE and glaciers. Operation icebridge will use airborne platforms to maintain altimetry time series and monitor important areas of land ICE and sea ICE until the launch of NASA S next satellite-lidar mission. Operation icebridge will monitor the sea ICE extent, snow cover on sea ICE, ICE sheet elevation, ICE sheet near surface firn to monitor accumulation trends (firn is snow which has persisted through one melt season), ICE sheet mass balance (the amount of mass contained within the ICE sheet) and the bed (the interface between the ICE and the bedrock) topography of the ICE sheet using airborne instruments. The bed map, a map of the bed rock topography underneath the ICE, is necessary information for models predicting future ICE sheet changes because IT dictates how the ICE flows towards the sea. Along with the bed rock topography, the surface topography in the form of digital elevation models (DEM S) of the ICE sheet is needed to estimate the total mass of the ICE sheet. This effort will follow on to a grant issued to the ohio state university for the expert advice of DR. Tony schenk (who now works for the university of buffalo (UB) where this order will be issued to) for processing the high resolution digital mapping system (DMS) photogrammetric images collected previously by operation icebridge aircraft campaigns and to develop algorithms to process the DMS data in the future. DR. Schenk will use the DMS photographs to create high resolution DEM S for monitoring the mass changes, and hence sea level rise, from the ICE sheets. The contractor shall provide expert advice and scientific expertise in photogrammetric processing of the DMS camera data that was collected during the antarctic 2009 (october-november, 2009) icebridge campaign. The scope of this effort is limited to: quality controlling the DMS camera images, generating a digital elevation model (DEM) from the DMS data, fusing of DMS imagery with altimetry data, and distributing to data center
