About this opportunity
NASA's Shared Services Center seeks engineering services for preliminary design and evaluation of lens options for the Aeolus Wide Field Context Camera (WFCC), with quotes due July 29, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Central Time and questions due July 28 at 3:00 p.m. Central Time. This procurement is a total small business set-aside and Brand Name or Equal To requirement.
Place of performance is Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. The work spans 120 hours from award through a to-be-determined completion date and requires no travel. The contractor must evaluate three lens development paths: a clean sheet design; reuse or minor modification of the VIPER mission NavCam lens; and modified Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) radiation-tolerant lens options. Each evaluation must establish likelihood of meeting performance requirements (field of view, sharpness, chromatic aberration, and image circle size) and provide rough order of magnitude cost and schedule estimates.
Required qualifications include a demonstrated history of successfully designing, developing, and delivering flight lenses for deep space orbiter imaging systems, a minimum of 10 years designing space-qualified optics, and an MS degree in optical sciences, physics, or related fields. Deliverables include weekly status meeting reports and written assessments of each design option with to-be-determined due dates, along with any Zemax models or simulations developed. Award will be made on a lowest price technically acceptable (LPTA) basis to the responsible offeror. The NAICS code is 541715, Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences. Quotes must remain valid for 30 days and include two points of contact. Submit quotes and all questions in writing to Kacey Hickman at Kacey.l.hickman@nasa.gov; telephone inquiries will not be accepted.
