About this opportunity
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative approaches for a ground-based receiver array to demonstrate optical laser power beaming technology through the POWER Receiver Array Demonstration (PRAD) program. The goal is to develop and validate the performance, reliability, and efficiency of a photovoltaic (PV) receiver array that can convert laser energy into electrical power. DARPA will use a two-phase evaluation process, first reviewing 3-page abstracts and then inviting selected offerors to provide oral presentations. The anticipated award is a single Other Transaction (OT) for Prototype agreement with a 6-month period of performance and potential options to extend the effort, with a total target DARPA funding of $350,000.
The PRAD solicitation is open to all responsible sources, including large and small businesses, nontraditional defense contractors, and research institutions. There is no set-aside designation. The demonstration is expected to take place at the High Energy Laser Systems Test Facility at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, utilizing a 860-meter test path and potentially longer multi-kilometer distances. DARPA anticipates milestone payments of $175,000, $50,000, and $125,000 during the 6-month base effort.

Update 9/27: Q&A Posted
Update 9/23: Proposer Day Slides Attached
Update 9/10: Revised Proposer date and question submattial date included in bold to Attached amended PS.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative demonstration approaches for a ground-based receiver array for optical laser power to address challenges in the Persistent Optical Wireless Energy Relay (POWER) Program. The POWER Receiver Array Demonstration (PRAD) program seeks to develop and demonstrate a laser power beaming receiver.
The envisioned Energy Web consists of three major component types: transmitters, relays, and receivers. Optical laser power beaming technology delivers energy over long distances via transmission by laser beam that is then directed towards a receiving station. The receiving station is equipped with photovoltaic cells or similar devices that capture the laser energy and convert it back into electrical power. A ground-to-ground demonstration is crucial for proving the feasibility and effectiveness of optical laser power beaming technology, particularly in validating the photovoltaic (PV) receiver array and its efficiency.
