About this opportunity
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), specifically the National Eye Institute (NEI), is seeking to procure specialized Plexon neural recording probes for advanced neurological research. The procurement covers five line items including various configurations of neural probes with 24-64 channels, 15um electrode diameters, and precise electrode spacing ranging from 50-100um, along with shipping and handling services. These highly specialized scientific instruments are required for simultaneous neuron recordings across cerebral cortex and subcortical brain regions at depths of 2-3 mm. The solicitation operates under a brand name restriction with Plexon as the sole manufacturer, as justified by their proprietary technology and unique compatibility requirements with existing research equipment. The government will evaluate proposals using lowest price technically acceptable criteria and intends to award a firm fixed-price purchase order. Quotes are due by September 26, 2025, with delivery required within 15 days after receipt of order.
This procurement does not include any small business set-aside designation and operates under Simplified Acquisition Procedures with NAICS code 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing) and a small business size standard of 1,000 employees. Plexon is identified as both the manufacturer and sole source supplier, with the justification noting they sell directly without resellers. The quantities requested include 6 units of one probe configuration, 2 units each of two different configurations, and 1 unit of a specialized probe type, plus shipping services. The total procurement value is not specified but falls under simplified acquisition thresholds of less than $250,000. Performance will occur with delivery to NIH, NEI at 31 Center Drive, Building 31, Bethesda, Maryland 20892, with FOB Destination terms.
