About this opportunity
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, has issued a Special Notice for the sole source procurement of a Tucker Davis Technologies Lux Fiber Photometry System. This specialized scientific equipment is designed for fiber photometry data acquisition and processing, capable of modulating different wavelengths of light at specific sinusoidal frequencies and processing signals at rates up to 50 KHz in real-time. The procurement includes two complete workstations with integrated LEDs, photosensors, power meters, fiber cable kits, optical manifolds, and experiment control systems. The contract opportunity is classified under NAICS code 541519 (Other Computer Related Services) and is structured as an 8(a) sole source small business set-aside. The notice was posted on August 17, 2025, with delivery expected to NIMH facilities in Bethesda, Maryland.
The procurement supports critical neuroscience research in the Laboratory on Neuronal Circuits and Behavior, specifically testing hypotheses about dopamine and acetylcholine's role in learning about reward timing to advance understanding of impulsivity and compulsive behaviors. The acquisition of two complete systems will enable concurrent data collection from four individual subjects, significantly improving research efficiency and data acquisition capabilities. Interested contractors must submit capability statements electronically to the contract specialist by September 1, 2025, at 12:00 PM EST. The contract period runs from September 22, 2025, to September 21, 2026, with delivery expected 10-12 weeks after order placement. The sole source justification is based on the unique technical specifications required for this specialized research equipment that can only be provided by Tucker Davis Technologies.
Notice text
The Tucker Davis Technologies (TDT) Lux Fiber Photometry System is a workstation and computer processor built specifically for fiber photometry data acquisition and processing. This process involves modulating different wavelengths of light at very specific sinusoidal frequencies and then receiving that signal back, at rates of up to 50 KHz, and demodulating it in real time. The Synapse software and accompanying computer card are required to control the processor. Our collaborating groups in the Laboratory on Neuronal Circuits and Behavior use several existing Tucker Davis Technologies RZ10x processors and our pilot data collection with their systems has been successful enough that we would like to replicate their data acquisition setup in our own Unit. We will use this system to perform critical experiments to test a key idea in our research program related to the role of dopamine and acetylcholine in learning about the timing of rewards. These studies will inform our understanding of the brain basis of impulsivity and compulsive behaviors. With two complete acquisition setups, we will be able to acquire data from four individual subjects concurrently, making it feasible to acquire sufficient data in a reasonable time for these studies.
