About this opportunity
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has published a Notice of Intent to Sole Source a Gallium Effusion Cell under FAR Subpart 13.106-1(b) authority. The notice, posted on January 22, 2026, indicates NIST's intent to negotiate directly with Veeco Process Equipment, Inc., located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, for the procurement of specialized laboratory equipment. This special notice falls under NAICS Code 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing) and is classified under PSC Category 6640 (Laboratory Equipment and Supplies). The procurement is categorized as a firm-fixed-price purchase order, with an anticipated award date of February 27, 2026, if competitive procedures are not pursued. This is not a formal solicitation but rather a notification of NIST's intent to proceed on a non-competitive basis.
NIST's Applied Physics Division requires emergency replacement of a gallium effusion cell that is critical to the operation of their Veeco GEN10 Molecular Beam Epitaxy System, which has been halted pending this replacement and is affecting multiple externally and internally funded research projects. Interested parties who believe they can meet the stated requirements must submit written responses demonstrating their capability to satisfy the specification by January 29, 2026, to lisa.stevens@nist.gov. The gallium effusion cell must be compatible with the Veeco GEN10 MBE system, feature dual zone heaters and dual filament "HotLip" heating technology, and be functionally similar to the original equipment manufacturer part. Delivery, installation, and training must be completed within eight weeks, with government acceptance testing expected to require an additional four weeks. No specialized installation services, extended warranties, or facility modifications are required, and standard shipping and base manufacturer warranty are acceptable.
