About this opportunity
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, on behalf of the Department of Energy, is conducting market research to identify sources capable of delivering Nitronic 50 stainless steel forgings in support of the High Field Test Facility Dipole project, with RFI responses due June 17, 2026 by 3:00 PM Pacific. No set-aside applies. Place of performance is the respondent's manufacturing facility; Buy American Act requirements (FAR 52.225-1) apply to any future procurement subcontract, with LBNL reserving the option to apply exceptions for foreign end products if pricing is 20–30% less than comparable domestic alternatives or comparable domestic products are unavailable.
Two endplates must be fabricated from single large Nitronic 50 forgings meeting ASTM A182 specification with UNS S20910/ASTM XM-19 composition, with minimum dimensions of 845 mm × 525 mm × 263 mm and finished specifications of 250 mm +4 mm/−0 mm thickness, 832 mm +/−1 mm height, and 512 mm +/−1 mm width (LBNL drawing numbers DF-1000-8853 and DF-1000-5103). The endplates apply end loading on a 15-ton superconducting magnet. Respondents must confirm manufacturing capability, facility location, domestic sourcing status under Buy American Act, inspection and testing capabilities with material certifications and non-destructive testing documentation, and estimated lead times for both forgings with options for staggered delivery.
NAICS 332111 (Iron and Steel Forging) applies; small business size standard is 750 or fewer employees. Desired lead time is 10 weeks or less. This RFI is for market research only; no subcontract award results from this announcement. Responses must be submitted to LBNL Procurement Representative Brian Zatkow at bzatkow@lbl.gov with no deadline extensions approved. Budgetary estimates are optional. Respondents must not submit proprietary information, as responses may be publicly disclosed without notification.
Notice text
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is conducting market research to identify potential sources that possess the capabilities necessary to deliver Nitronic 50 Stainless Steel forgings in support of the High Field Test Facility Dipole project (TFD).
A key component of the TFD project are the two endplates, which are used to apply end loading on a 15T superconducting magnet. Each of these endplates must be fabricated from a single large Nitronic 50 Stainless Steel forging. LBNL is seeking a source for these forgings.
Please see the RFI document attached for details and specifications. LBNL drawing numbers DF-1000-8853 and DF-1000-5103 are included for reference to demonstrate the TFD endplates that will be fabricated from these forgings.
