GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Title: Nationally Representative Survey of Race-Related Stressors and Cardiovascular Health Outcomes across Racialized Groups in the US
2. Background Information: The NIMHD Division of Intramural Research (NIMHD DIR) plans and directs the Institute’s clinical, behavioral, epidemiologic, and population health intramural research programs. The NIMHD DIR conducts research that seeks to identify the factors that contribute to health disparities, develop interventions to reduce these disparities, promote the health and well-being of racial/ethnic minority populations and raise awareness of numerous health disparities, including cardiovascular-related health outcomes.
There is a high burden of cardiovascular-related outcomes (such as hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, stroke and chronic kidney disease) among racialized groups in the US (e.g., non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, Asian) and these disparities may be influenced by race-related stressors, such as discrimination. However, few studies have explored the heterogeneity of racialized groups and how other racialized experiences (e.g., ascribed race, shade of skin color, views of one’s race) could influence the relationship between discrimination and cardiovascular-related health outcomes. (There is also limited research on social and cultural factors (e.g., vigilance, resilience) that may be protective against the deleterious cardiovascular health effects of discrimination.
Data collected from this survey will provide additional insight into the experiences of racialized groups, as well as uncover how these specific experiences impact cardiovascular-related outcomes within and across racialized groups in the US.
Purpose/Objectives
The purpose of this award will be to provide specialized services to support NIMHD in screening and recruiting racialized groups in the US to participate in a nationally representative study.
The objectives of this study are to: (1) investigate the similarities and differences in the prevalence of cardiovascular-related outcomes within and across racialized groups, (2) identify sources of stress (e.g., discrimination, perceived neighborhood social environment, financial worries) contributing to cardiovascular-related outcomes, (3) examine the joint effects of stressors and racialized experiences, and (4) explore the moderating factors that may inform interventions to mitigate the cardiovascular health effects of stressors experienced by racialized groups.
Period of Performance:
Base Year: September 30, 2024 through September 29, 2025
Option Year One: September 30, 2025 through September 29, 2026
