About this opportunity
The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking to procure a MPEX Diagnostic Residual Gas Analyzer (DRGA) Skid for the Material-Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The procurement involves a complex scientific instrumentation system consisting of two turbomolecular pumps, one scroll pump, a Hiden DLS-1 quadrupole mass spectrometer, a Gencoa Optix optical emission spectrometer, associated valves, pipes, and instrumentation and control components. The primary objective of this equipment is to provide real-time diagnostic information during MPEX operations, specifically for conducting accelerated lifetime tests of plasma-facing components that have experienced neutron damage. The pre-solicitation notice was posted on February 11, 2025, with responses due by February 18, 2025, indicating a tight timeline for potential contractors. While specific evaluation criteria are not explicitly detailed in the notice, the technical complexity suggests that vendors will need demonstrated expertise in advanced scientific instrumentation manufacturing.
The contract opportunity is classified under NAICS category 334516 for Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing and has no specific set-aside designation, meaning it is open to all qualified vendors. The procurement falls under the PSC category AJ13 for General Science & Technology R&D Services, specifically focused on experimental development. Although exact award values are not specified, the sophisticated nature of the diagnostic skid implies a potentially significant contract value for the right technological capabilities. The DRGA skid is a critical component of the larger MPEX device, which is a superconducting magnet steady-state device designed to test materials under extreme fusion reactor conditions. Potential contractors will need to demonstrate advanced engineering capabilities in creating precise scientific measurement and diagnostic equipment capable of operating in high-stress research environments.

MPEX Diagnostic Residual Gas Analyzer (DRGA) Skid
The Material-Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX), a superconducting magnet, steady-state device, is being built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), herein referred to as "ORNL", to address the harsh conditions inside a fusion reactor. This device, as designed, will have the unique feature of being able to conduct accelerated lifetime tests of plasma-facing components, including those that have experienced neutron damage.
The MPEX Diagnostic Residual Gas Analyzer (DRGA) Subsystem consists of one DRGA skid consisting of two (2) turbomolecular pumps, one (1) scroll pump, a Hiden DLS-1 quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), a Gencoa Optix optical emission spectrometer (OES), valves, pipes, and instrumentation and controls (I&C). The DRGA skid is located on the MPEX device to provide real-time diagnostic information during MPEX operations. The DRGA skid and associated components are part of the Diagnostic Subsystem.
