About this opportunity

The Department of Energy, acting through Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Molecular Foundry Division, is conducting market research for a Micro Electron Diffractometer (MicroED) System with a Request for Information due October 23, 2026. This is a research-instrument procurement with no set-aside. The system will support the Molecular Foundry as a DOE Office of Science User Facility providing atomic-structure determination for nanocrystalline and microcrystalline materials unsuitable for conventional single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

The instrument must meet ten preliminary technical specifications: continuous rotation collection at 200 K; low-dose screening with electron-counting detection using direct pixel array detector technology and zero dark current; dynamic range exceeding 10^6 and framing rates of at least 100 fps; automated grain recognition and centering via AI/computer-vision technology; concurrent indexing and space-group estimation during data acquisition; hierarchical unit-cell clustering algorithms achieving greater than 95% completeness; integrated structure solution and refinement pipeline using industry-standard non-proprietary crystallographic software; stable diffraction-ready parallel-beam optics with beam energy spread below 0.7 eV; ultra-low goniometer drift below 1 nm/min; and baseline operation at ambient temperature with cryo-cooling capability. The instrument must support modular upgrade paths for future enhancements including air-free transfer and in-situ environmental controls.

Responses must include published product literature, technical specifications demonstrating compliance, and country-of-origin information. NAICS 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing) applies, with a small business size standard of 1,000 or fewer employees. This RFI is for planning purposes only and does not constitute a commitment or procurement solicitation. Contact Karen Tays at kktays@lbl.gov.

Notice text

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Molecular Foundry Division operates a DOE Office of Science User Facility that provides state-of-the-art expertise and instrumentation for nanoscale science research in materials science, chemistry, biology, and energy. A dedicated Micro Electron Diffractometer (MicroED) System supports this mission by enabling routine atomic-structure determination for nanocrystalline and microcrystalline materials that are too small for conventional single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ensuring the advanced structural characterization capabilities required for user projects and scientific discoveries meet the facility’s demanding research standards.
