About this opportunity
NASA's National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center has issued a Special Notice for the sole source procurement of specialized magnets required for future builds of Stirling convertors and active balancers. The agency intends to award a contract to TDA MAGNETICS LLC of Rancho Dominguez, California, under FAR 13.106-1(b)(1)(i) authority, having determined that TDA MAGNETICS is the sole provider capable of supplying these specific magnets. The procurement will be conducted using commercial item procedures under FAR Parts 12 and 13, with performance taking place at NASA Glenn Research Center. The NAICS code for this procurement is 332999 (All Other Miscellaneous Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing). The notice was initially posted on September 18, 2025, with a modified due date of September 25, 2025.
The procurement specifically involves 400 ShinEtsu R32HS rare-earth magnets for the Sunpower Robust Stirling Converter, a critical space power conversion technology that supports NASA's spacecraft power systems. Despite the intended sole source award, NASA is providing an opportunity for other organizations to submit their capabilities and qualifications in writing to Procurement Specialist Laura Quave by the September 25, 2025 deadline at 3:00 PM Central Time. These submissions will be evaluated solely to determine whether the procurement should be conducted on a competitive basis, though the final determination remains at the government's discretion. The magnets require specialized Wire EDM processing and include specific technical requirements for magnetic properties necessary for reliable performance in extreme space environments. The performance period extends through December 31, 2025, with an expected delivery timeline of 10-12 weeks after authorization to proceed, ensuring continued development of NASA's advanced energy conversion technologies for future spaceflight applications.
