About this opportunity
The United States Forest Service (USFS) issued a Request for Information (RFI) on March 16, 2026, seeking market research on LiDAR system payloads for unmanned aircraft applications. This Special Notice is for information gathering purposes only and does not constitute a formal solicitation for proposals or commit the government to any financial obligation. The USFS is interested in Light Detection and Ranging sensor systems that can be integrated with approved unmanned aircraft platforms—specifically the Freefly AltaX, Freefly Astro, or Vision Aerial Switchblade—to support resource management and engineering activities across National Forests and Grasslands. This is a civilian agency procurement within the Aircraft Manufacturing and Unmanned Aircraft categories.
Interested vendors must submit responses by March 31, 2026, at 1200 hours Mountain Time to steven.b.peterson@usda.gov in PDF format, including their Unique Entity Identifier (UEI). The USFS seeks LiDAR solutions capable of vegetation mapping, flood plain mapping, erosion monitoring, hazard assessment, terrain analysis, infrastructure inspections, and topographic surveys, with technical specifications including a 905 nm Class 1 eye-safe laser, 2-3 cm precision and accuracy tolerances, and 200+ lines per second scan rate. Submissions must include manufacturer "No Technical Objection" certification, country of origin disclosure, and proof of boresight calibration, along with perpetual software licenses for post-processing and data analysis with no annual fees. The USFS reserves the right to request live demonstrations with approved unmanned aircraft at a future date, and all costs incurred in responding are the offeror's responsibility with no government funds currently authorized for this effort.

No funds have been authorized, appropriated, or received for this contemplated effort. Any cost incurred shall be at the Offeror’s own risk. Live demonstrations that are currently integrated with approved USFS unmanned aircraft may be requested at a future date. Responses shall include potential Offeror’s Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), be in PDF format, and emailed to the Contracting Officer by 1200 hours MT, March 31, 2026, at steven.b.peterson@usda.gov.
