About this opportunity
The 42nd Contracting Squadron at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama has published a Special Notice announcing its intent to award a sole source contract to VEX Robotics of Greenville, Texas for VEX AIR Competition Drone Bundles. This procurement is being conducted under Federal Acquisition Regulation 13.106-1(b) as a firm fixed price contract specifically for the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AFJROTC) program. The contract falls under NAICS code 339930 (Doll, Toy, and Game Manufacturing) with a small business size standard of 700 employees. The government is soliciting responses from potential vendors who believe they can meet the requirements before proceeding with the sole source award. The contract period will span five years from September 30, 2025 to September 29, 2030, consisting of a base year plus four option years.
The primary purpose of this procurement is to support AFJROTC's tiered drone education program designed to strengthen cadet recruitment, engagement, and STEM proficiency, with the VEX AIR platform serving as the second tier of training. Each drone bundle must include comprehensive equipment such as the VEX AIR drone, controller, various modules, batteries, communication headset, propellers, and charging accessories, all meeting specific technical requirements including Section 889 compliance and weighing less than 249 grams. Interested contractors must respond by September 9, 2025 at 12:00 PM CST to demonstrate their capability to provide the required drone bundle components and meet all technical specifications. The contractor must also provide OEM warranties, brand new equipment, and training for AFJROTC instructors on curriculum delivery, assembly, coding, and operation. VEX components must be purchased directly from VEX Robotics to maintain eligibility for VEX Robotics Competition participation, which supports the government's rationale for the sole source approach.
