About this opportunity
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), a Department of Energy civilian agency, is conducting market research to identify sources capable of providing a fast-cycle dilution refrigeration system for quantum computing research. The primary objective is to acquire equipment that can rapidly cycle and optimize experimental parameters for superconducting quantum computer chip development, specifically addressing challenges in qubit lifetime and performance during scale-up processes. The Request for Information (RFI) seeks vendors with capabilities to deliver a specialized refrigeration system that can achieve rapid sample cooldown, maintain specific temperature requirements, and provide integrated thermometry with automated routines. Potential vendors must submit product literature demonstrating compliance with technical specifications by February 26, 2025, at 3:00 PM Pacific time, to the designated email address (bzatkow@lbl.gov). The market research is classified under NAICS category 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing) with a size standard of 1,000 employees.
The pre-solicitation notice indicates no specific set-aside designations for this opportunity, suggesting it is open to all qualified vendors. Vendors are requested to indicate whether their proposed system qualifies as a domestic end product under the Buy American Act. While budgetary estimates are optional, the RFI emphasizes technical capabilities over pricing at this stage. The system specifications require a sample area larger than 2" in diameter, ability to maintain a 24-hour hold time at specific temperature conditions, support for 12 DC wires, and integrated vibration damping mechanisms. This market research represents a preliminary exploration of potential solutions and does not constitute a formal solicitation, allowing LBNL to gather comprehensive information about available technologies for advanced quantum computing research equipment.
Notice text
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is conducting market research to identify sources that possess the capabilities and experience necessary to provide a fast-cycle dilution refrigeration system.
With ever-increasing numbers of quantum bits (‘qubits’) on a superconducting quantum computer chip, defects in the design and materials will be amplified and result in unusable qubit lifetime during scale-up. The optimization of design and materials as well as exploration of potential new materials for the system rely on sequential experiments, where parameters of a previous step are necessary for the optimization of the next. Such iterations are typically hindered by the long cycling time of a dilution refrigerator. A fast-cycling dilution refrigerator is essential equipment for circuit design and material optimization for presevering performance such as qubit lifetime during scaling.
Please see the attached RFI document for preliminary specifications and submission instructions.
