About this opportunity
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued a combined Sources Sought Notice and Notice of Intent to Sole Source on April 23, 2026, seeking information regarding the procurement of a 3D vector magnet system compatible with a Bluefors LD 250 dilution refrigerator. The notice invites capable sources to submit capability statements demonstrating their ability to provide the required magnet system with integrated power supply and programmer. If no acceptable alternate sources are identified through this notice, NIST intends to conduct sole source negotiations with Bluefors, Inc., located in Brooklyn, New York, under FAR authority. The procurement falls under NAICS code 334516 (Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing) and PSC 6640 (Laboratory Equipment and Supplies), with a small business size standard of 1,000 employees. Interested contractors must submit responses by email to Jennifer Lohmeier at Jennifer.lohmeier@nist.gov no later than May 8, 2026, at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. This is not a solicitation or request for quotation, and no award will result directly from this notice.
The magnet system is required to support quantum memory research conducted by NIST's Information Technology Laboratory in collaboration with the University of Chicago and Carnegie Mellon University, utilizing erbium-doped yttrium orthosilicate platforms. Contractors must demonstrate capability to deliver a 3D vector magnet rated at 6-1-1 Tesla at 4.2K with specified homogeneity tolerances, a persistent current switch, and a three-axis power supply and programmer within eight months of order receipt. All equipment must be new in original manufacturer packaging with complete documentation and software, delivered FOB Destination to NIST's facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Payment will be made 100% upon receipt and acceptance following performance testing and inspection, with an OEM standard commercial item warranty required from the contractor. Contractor responses should include company name and address, point of contact information, UEI, validated SAM.gov business classification, and a detailed capability statement addressing how the company can meet NIST's technical and delivery requirements.
