About this opportunity
The Food and Drug Administration intends to award a sole-source firm fixed price purchase order to MIMETAS B.V. for development of a 3D human blood-brain barrier formation assay, with a response deadline of June 12, 2026, at 3:00 PM EST for capability statements from competing vendors. Under FAR 6.302-1(a)(2)(ii), the FDA has determined that only one responsible source can satisfy the requirement; however, any party believing it can meet the stated requirement may submit a written capability statement by the due date for government review.
The contractor shall develop and optimize a multi-chip microfluidic plate format assay incorporating three human-derived cell types—brain microvascular endothelial cells, neurons (iPSC- or ESC-derived), and astrocytes (iPSC- or ESC-derived)—with a minimum of 40 microfluidic chips per plate. The assay will evaluate barrier formation and integrity using phase contrast imaging, transendothelial electrical resistance, FITC-dextran permeability, and cell viability assays to assess developmental neurotoxicity in foods and dietary supplements. The contractor must evaluate at minimum two in-plate assay control chemicals at three concentrations each and four performance compounds at eight concentrations determined in consultation with the technical point of contact. Raw experimental data in electronic format (.csv or .RData preferred) shall be delivered within sixty days after experiment completion. Work is performed at the contractor's facilities. Award is anticipated within approximately ten days of the notice date unless the government determines another organization can meet the requirement.
