About this opportunity
NASA's Shared Services Center issued a sources sought notice on August 25, 2026, for development and manufacturing of an injection-molded outer sun visor for the Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit, with a capability submission deadline of August 28, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Central Time. NASA intends to award a sole-source contract to Three-Dimensional Services, Inc., under FAR 12.102(a) authority, based on that firm's prior sole-provider status for inner sun visor injection mold design; however, the agency reserves discretion to proceed competitively if justified by submitted capabilities.
The outer sun visor must meet strict optical and mechanical specifications: a 60-degree wedge measuring 12.6 inches wide (±0.00/−0.01 inches) with minimum 82 percent visible light transmission, haze not exceeding 2 percent per ASTM D1003, and refractive error limited to 0.125 D in the critical vision area. The component must withstand 125-pound contact loads and 2-inch steel ball impacts at 1.4 ft/s without catastrophic failure. The contract is Firm Fixed Price with a 6-month period of performance from Authorize to Proceed. The contractor must deliver 10 production-quality prototypes, a mold design presentation, a process definition and control plan with standard operating procedures, monthly status presentations, and hardware accompanied by material certifications and a Certificate of Compliance. Work is performed at NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas. Interested vendors should submit written capabilities addressing Technical Capability, Past Performance, and Price to Cara Craft (cara.s.craft@nasa.gov) or Bobbie Young (Bobbie.j.young@nasa.gov).
