About this opportunity
The National Institute of Standards and Technology seeks a camera-based Fizeau interferometer to replace aging sphere-calibration equipment, with quotations due August 26, 2026 at 11:00 AM Eastern Time. This is a commercial items acquisition conducted under simplified acquisition procedures; no prototypes, demonstration models, used, or refurbished instruments will be considered.
Place of performance is Gaithersburg, Maryland. The procurement comprises three line items: one new camera-based Fizeau interferometer unit (CLIN 0001), associated software (CLIN 0002), and documentation (CLIN 0003). The interferometer must weigh no more than 25 kg, operate in horizontal and downward-facing vertical orientations, feature a sealed optical path preventing dust intrusion, mount an angle-adjustable transmission flat in the beam path, and image interference fringes at approximately 633 nm wavelength using a frequency-stabilized laser supplied by the contractor. Equipment must operate without damage in environmental conditions of 15–30°C and 5–95% relative humidity (non-condensing), with performance specifications applying within 19.1–20.1°C and 25–60% relative humidity. NIST prefers systems capable of operation at 514 nm, 543 nm, and/or 771 nm wavelengths using excess fractions for fringe order determination. All equipment must be new with original manufacturer packaging, documentation, and software.
NAICS code is 334516, Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing, with a small business size standard of 1,000 employees. PSC code is 6650. Quotations must be organized into three volumes: technical capability (Volume I), firm-fixed-price quotations (Volume II), and terms and conditions (Volume III). Delivery is FOB Destination with all shipping costs and applicable tariffs included in pricing. Award will be made to the lowest-priced, technically acceptable offeror meeting all minimum requirements. Pre-quote questions were due three calendar days from August 14. All quoters must maintain active SAM.gov registration at submission and through award and final payment.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Dimensional Metrology Group (DMG), located in Gaithersburg, MD, delivers world class dimensional calibration services to support United States manufacturing and other industries. Of particular importance is the calibration of spheres, which serve as reference objects to universal length measuring machines and coordinate measurement machines used internally at NIST and by customers. The NIST DMG is seeking a camera-based Fizeau interferometer to replace ageing equipment responsible for the calibration of the diameter of spheres. A description of the existing equipment and its operation can be found here: https://www.nist.gov/publications/sphere-diameter-interferometry-nanometer-uncertainty.
