About this opportunity
The United States Forest Service (USFS) Incident Procurement Operations has issued a Request for Information (RFI) designated as Special Notice for market research on advanced battery solutions for unmanned aircraft systems. This RFI, posted on March 16, 2026, seeks information on high-performance batteries compatible with the Alta X heavy-lift unmanned aircraft currently manufactured by Freefly Systems. The RFI is explicitly for market research purposes only and does not constitute a formal solicitation for proposals, nor does it commit the government to fund any responsive efforts or enter into a contract. All costs incurred by respondents are at their own risk, and no funds have been authorized or appropriated for this effort. Responses must be submitted in PDF format by March 31, 2026, at 1200 hours Mountain Time to the identified Contracting Officer.
The USFS seeks innovative battery technologies that can enhance operational capabilities for demanding applications, particularly wildfire management and remote aerial operations, by offering increased capacity, extended flight endurance, faster charging capabilities, and improved energy density. Respondents must provide comprehensive technical specifications including battery chemistry type, energy density metrics, performance data across various altitudes, discharge ratings, and advanced battery management systems with telemetry capabilities. Submissions must demonstrate compatibility with the Alta X airframe specifications, weight and balance requirements, and appropriate communication interfaces, along with safety compliance documentation addressing transportation regulations and emergency procedures. While there are no formal eligibility restrictions, the government prioritizes U.S. domestic sources and requires all respondents to provide their Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) with their submission. The government reserves the right to request live demonstrations with FAA-qualified Remote Pilots at a future date, and respondents should include production lead times, technical support capabilities, warranty terms, relevant case studies, and rough order of magnitude cost estimates in their responses.
Notice text
This RFI is for market research only and does not constitute a solicitation for proposals. The information provided may be utilized by the USFS in developing its acquisition strategy and requirements documents. It does not commit the Government to pay any cost incurred in the submission of responses or in making necessary studies or designs, nor to contract for supplies or services. No funds have been authorized, appropriated, or received for this contemplated effort. Any cost incurred shall be at the Offeror’s own risk. Live demonstrations that are currently integrated with approved USFS unmanned aircraft may be requested at a future date. Responses shall include potential Offeror’s Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), be in PDF format, and emailed to the Contracting Officer by 1200 hours MT, March 31, 2026, at steven.b.peterson@usda.gov.
