About this opportunity

Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) at China Lake intends to procure a Thermoplastic Fiber Placement (TPFP) processing head on a sole-source basis under FAR 6.103-1, with responses due June 22, 2026. The intended source is Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Albany, Inc.

This sources-sought notice is for market research purposes only and is not a formal request for proposals. The TPFP head must be fully compatible with the currently installed Trelleborg XTS-400 automated fiber placement system and interchangeable with the existing thermoset processing head. The equipment will enable fabrication of composite parts using thermoplastic resins, expanding the Composites Engineering Laboratory's current thermoset-only capability.

Technical specifications require the head to process single-tow slit tape material with heating capability between 250 to 975 degrees Celsius via hot gas torch (with optional laser upgrade), apply up to 150 pounds of compaction force, include tape splice sensing for quality control, and support attitude degrees of freedom for complex surface conformance. The head must operate on 480VAC three-phase power (estimated 60 amperes), clean dry compressed air at 100–150 psi (50 liters per minute), and clean dry nitrogen at 100–150 psi (120 liters per minute).

Delivery is required within one year of order receipt to China Lake, California. The contractor must perform internal bench testing, provide comprehensive documentation, conduct on-site installation and training (1–3 days), and deliver a one-year warranty against defects from commissioning and 90-day spare-parts warranty from shipment. Interested firms are encouraged to submit capability statements and comments on the draft Performance Work Statement by the June 22 deadline.
