About this opportunity
The Department of the Interior, through the Interior Business Center, issued a sole source justification notice on April 21, 2026, to award a firm-fixed-price contract for the full conservation and regilding of four monumental equestrian bronze sculptures comprising the Arts of War and Arts of Peace statuary groups located at Memorial Bridge and Parkway Drive in Washington, D.C. The awarded vendor, The Gilder's Studio, INC., located in Olney, Maryland, will provide comprehensive bronze conservation treatment, application of 30-gram 23.75-karat gold leaf, cleaning and repair of granite plinths, scaffold and containment system installation, environmental protection measures, and full documentation of all treatment activities in compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The sole source justification was supported by The Gilder's Studio's unique qualifications in specialized exterior gilding using high-purity gold leaf, extensive conservation expertise with monumental bronze sculptures, and demonstrated ability to meet compressed timelines in high-visibility public settings, with market research confirming they are the only known vendor capable of meeting the accelerated schedule requirements. The critical driver for the sole source award is an aggressive timeline requiring work completion by July 3, 2026, to support the 250th anniversary commemoration of the Declaration of Independence, necessitating an April 17, 2026, award deadline to accommodate the 8-week lead time for gold leaf procurement. Although the contract value remains redacted in the publicly available notice, the work must commence immediately upon award and conclude within approximately 10 weeks.
