About this opportunity
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency seeks proposals to develop foundational artificial intelligence capabilities that enable synthetic agents to collaborate effectively with human teammates through social intelligence. Proposals are due by May 17, 2019 for the Artificial Social Intelligence for Successful Teams program and will be evaluated based on the proposer's approach to addressing technical requirements in one of three areas: new AI agent architectures, cognitive modeling of human individuals and teams, or methods for evaluating AI-human team environments. Anticipated multiple awards are planned for the first two areas and a single award for the evaluation methods domain.
There is no set-aside designation for this pre-solicitation notice. The work involves research in artificial intelligence and falls under NAICS code 541715 and PSC code R408. Evaluation exercises will take place over four years involving increasingly complex team-based challenges. Templates are provided to help structure proposals and estimate costs across three phases of work. The broad agency announcement does not specify budget ranges but seeks revolutionary advances to rigorously demonstrate machine social intelligence in team settings.
Notice text
DARPA is seeking revolutionary ideas that lead to rigorous and practical demonstrations of the feasibility and effectiveness of advances in machine social intelligence in a teaming context. ASIST envisions synthetic agents that observe their surroundings; build and maintain rich representations of the environment, team, and individuals; infer their teammates’ beliefs and goals (and other unobservable states); predict their actions and needs; and assist the team by planning interventions and executing them at appropriate times..
