About this opportunity

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has issued a pre-solicitation notice for the Artificial Intelligence Quantified (AIQ) program. The goal of AIQ is to develop technology to assess and understand the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in order to enable guaranteed performance. The program solicits proposals in two technical areas: providing rigorous mathematical foundations for quantifying AI capabilities, and developing methods for empirically evaluating AI models. Proposals will be evaluated based on scientific/technical merit, relevance to DARPA's mission, and cost realism. Abstracts are due June 28, 2024, and full proposals are due August 20, 2024.

This pre-solicitation does not use any set-aside designations. DARPA anticipates making multiple awards, potentially in the form of procurement contracts, cooperative agreements, or other transaction agreements. The program will span two 18-month phases, with an emphasis on open-source development and collaboration across performers. While no specific budget range is provided, the program's focus on advancing the state-of-the-art in AI assessment and understanding indicates it is likely a significant research effort.

Notice text

The goal of AIQ is to assess and understand capabilities without access to internals, a goal which will be expedited by having access to the internals of open-sourced models, given the architectural similarity to proprietary models.
