Impella Catheters are used in the Cath Lab during emergency catheterization surgeries.
The Impella is the world s smallest heart pump that provides cardiac support by pumping blood through the heart during a procedure. In high risk patients for whom surgery is not an option, interventional cardiac procedures utilize this ventricular assist device to assist the heart. This device can successfully save lives during high risk procedures when other options are no longer available.
During high risk procedures, when the patient s heart is too weak every second counts to ensure a safe and positive outcome by saving lives. During a procedure, a catheter is inserted from the femoral artery into the heart and assists the heart with forward flow (the flow is dependent on the size of the catheter).
The Impella Controller/CP Pump Set pulls blood from the left ventricle through an inlet area near the tip and expels blood from the catheter into the ascending aorta. It is utilized to maintain the patient cardiac output. Cardiac output is the #1 correlated mortality for acute myocardial infarction in cardiogenic shock patients.
