About this opportunity

The Department of the Navy Naval Facilities Engineering Command awarded contract N39430-25-C-0006 valued at $1,823,032 to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on September 3, 2025, for research examining temporary threshold shift (TTS) in juvenile loggerhead and green sea turtles under the 2024-2025 Living Marine Resources Program. The awarded contract will fund a study conducted at NC State University's CMAST facility to develop and refine methods for measuring hearing sensitivity and noise-induced hearing loss in sea turtles using broadband and narrowband noise exposure tests. The research will involve captive-reared loggerhead hatchlings and cold-stunned or wild-caught green turtle juveniles to establish TTS thresholds across multiple sound levels and durations, with potential for additional phases extending to broader noise exposure studies. The project prioritizes animal safety protocols while developing standardized testing procedures to inform future noise impact assessments for sea turtle conservation efforts.

Notice text

This study at NC State University’s CMAST will examine temporary threshold shift (TTS) in juvenile loggerhead and green sea turtles, with approval from wildlife authorities. Loggerheads will be captive-reared hatchlings, while greens will be cold-stunned or wild-caught turtles. Juveniles are targeted due to easier handling and relevance to noise exposure risks. The project will develop and refine methods to measure hearing and TTS onset using broadband noise, comparing species with different hearing sensitivities. Initial work will include acoustic mapping of test environments, optimizing sedation and restraint, and establishing protocols for long-duration auditory tests. Experiments will test multiple sound levels and durations to identify TTS thresholds, followed by narrowband noise studies. Optional phase 2 and 3 may extend to broader noise exposure types. Throughout, animal safety, consistent data quality, and acoustic environment control are prioritized to inform future noise impact assessments for sea turtles.

Awarded contract N39430-25-C-0006 to WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION for 1823032.00 on 2025-09-03.
