About this file
This is a specifications document from NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory detailing technical requirements for Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) probes and equipment in support of NOAA's XBT Network. The document outlines specific requirements for XBT probes capable of measuring temperature profiles at various depths (750m, 1000m, and 1800m) at different ship speeds, with precise vertical resolution and accuracy specifications. It also details requirements for XCTD probes that can measure both temperature and conductivity profiles at depths up to 1850m with specified resolution and accuracy parameters.
The document includes specific Lockheed Martin part numbers for required equipment including Deep Blue XBT Probe (300686-1), T-5 Fast Deep Probe (211105-2), and various XCTD probes. Delivery terms specify completion within 6 months of order receipt, with shipping to AOML Facility in Miami, FL under FOB Destination terms for local deliveries and FOB Origin using Government/Commercial Bills of Lading for other locations. The equipment must include recording capabilities with specific temperature accuracy requirements and integration capability with automatic probe launchers, along with Ethernet compatibility.

Requestor: Francis Bringas-Gutierrez
NOAA/AOML requires probes, recording instruments, and other related supplies in support of the XBT Network.
Technical Requirements
Vendor must provide items that meet the following requirements:
1) XBT probes capable of measuring:
● Temperature profiles of at least 750 m at ship speeds of 20 knots or more
● Temperature profiles of at least 1000 m at ship speeds of 20 knots or more
● Temperature profiles of at least 1800 m at ship speeds of 6 knots or more
● Temperature profiles with vertical resolution of 70 cm or better and accuracy of 0.1°C
● Conductivity measurements between 0 and 70 mS/cm, with a resolution of 0.02 mS/cm or better, and accuracy of 0.03 mS/cm.
2) XCTD probes capable of measuring:
• Temperature and conductivity profiles of at least 1000 m at ship speeds of 12 knots or more
• Temperature and conductivity profiles of at least 1850 m at ship speeds of 3.5 knots or more
• Temperature and conductivity profiles of at least 1000 m at ship speeds of 20 knots or more
• Temperature profiles with a resolution of 0.01°C and accuracy of ±0.02°C
• Conductivity profiles with a resolution of 0.017 mS/cm and accuracy of ±0.03 mS/cm
3) Recording equipment capable of:
● Recording temperature profiles using the above mentioned probe types
● Easy integration to the operation of automatic probe launchers
● Recording temperature profiles with accuracy of 0.2°C, temperature resolution of 0.01°C, at a temperature range of -2 to 35°C for XBT probes.
● Recording temperature and salinity profiles from Expendable Conductivity / Temperature / Depth (XCTD) probes.
