About this file

This document is a draft performance specification sheet for conformal wearable lithium-ion batteries to be used in Nett Warrior systems. The specification details technical requirements for battery dimensions, weight, voltage range, capacity, environmental testing, safety features, and electromagnetic compatibility. Batteries must meet requirements for drop testing, flexibility, corrosion resistance, electrostatic discharge, nail penetration, and conformability when curved. The document outlines verification test methods and provides sample sizes for first article and conformance inspections. Industry is invited to attend an information day on November 22, 2019 to learn about requirements and provide feedback through submitted white papers. Responses are due by November 15, 2019. Project Manager Close Combat Squad at Fort Belvoir, Virginia will host the event and brief industry on the direction of soldier-worn batteries.

Attached is the performance specification sheet.

Add: Charge at 2.36 amperes with a charge voltage limit of 50 volts minimum during the 21-766 hour overcharge period of 4.7.4.7b. Discharge batteries at a constant 28W load to final voltage 767 in step 4.7.4.7e. One sample shall be tested via the main connector and one sample shall be 768 tested via the charge contacts. Verify that the battery meets the overcharge/electrical leakage 769 capacity requirements of 3.5.3. 770

4.7.4.8. Nail Penetration Test 772

The following test shall be performed. The batteries under test shall be recorded using video (at 774 not less than 1080p 30 frames per second) and thermal cameras while subject to the following 775 nail penetration tests. Recordings shall not cease until 10 minutes following the impact of the 776 last nail in the test. 777

Single penetration test 779

a. Fully charge the battery in accordance with 4.6; use of 4.6.3 is permitted. 781

b. Place the batteries on a surface that will not inhibit the movement of the nail 782

c. Mark a random location on each test sample to be penetrated, avoiding any 783 critical areas. 784

d. Batteries shall be placed on a resistive load of 30Ω +/- 10%. 785

e. Use a 2.5 mm DIA stainless steel nail with a length that exceeds the width or 786 diameter of the battery. Drive the nail completely through the samples. 787

f. Record for each test: the date, time, place, ambient and battery temperatures, 788

(not less often than once per 15 seconds), and any events (e.g. smoke, fire, cell 789 activity, and disassembly) along with the event time and associated event 790 severity. 791

g. Batteries shall meet the requirements of section 3.7.2.8. 792

Multiple nail penetration test: 794

a. Fully charge the battery in accordance with 4.6; use of 4.6.3 is permitted. 796

b. Place the batteries on a surface that will not inhibit the movement of the nail 797

c. Randomly mark no less than three location on each test sample to be 798 penetrated, avoiding any critical areas. 799

d. Batteries shall be placed on a resistive load of 30Ω +/- 10%. 800

e. Use a 2.5 mm DIA stainless steel nail with a length that exceeds the width or 801 diameter of the battery. Drive the nail completely through the samples. 802

f. Record for each test: the date, time, place, ambient and battery temperatures, 803

(not less often than once per 15 seconds), and any events (e.g. smoke, fire, cell 804 activity, and disassembly) along with the event time and associated event 805 severity. 806

g. Batteries shall meet the requirements of section 3.7.2.8. 807

4.7.7. Replace: Electromagnetic interference. 809

CWB EMI shall be characterized with a PM SWAR GSS approved U.S. Army system such as a 810 Nett Warrior System as a load for the CWB. Conducted tests shall reflect battery contributions 811 shall be recorded and verified to not exceed that of MIL-STD-461. Note, the Government may 812 require personnel with security clearance or may conduct independent testing and adjudication 813 of independent test results. 814

CS114: Applicable if permanently integrated power cable is part of battery. Testing shall utilize 816 Aircraft (External or Safety Critical) level limits 817

CS115: Applicable if permanently integrated power cable is part of battery. Testing shall utilize 819 Aircraft (External or Safety Critical) level limits 820

CS116: Use limits of FIGURE CS116-2. 822

RE101: Use the limites of FIGURE RE 101-1 824

RE102: Use the limits of FIGURE RE102-4 from 2 MHz to 18 GHz for the Nett Warrior 826 application 827

RS101: Not applicable 829

RS103. Testing shall utilize Aircraft (External or Safety Critical) level limits for2 MHz to 18 GHz. 831

4.7.8. System level integration. Verify through test that battery meets requirements of 3.11 833 while connected to Nett Warrior Extended Mission Configuration. 834 Repeat testing in 4.7.7 with battery connected to NW system. Radios shall be tested at a 836 minimum of 20 frequencies or 10 frequencies per operational band for any multi-band radio. 837
