POL/F-24
a. Unless a different method is specified in the test item requirements document, the test item will be dipped in a pan with 3.0 to
7.0 mm (0.1 to 0.3 in.) of POL as specified by the requirements document, so that the test item is fully immersed. The test item will remain immersed at ambient temperature for the length of time specified in the requirements document. The POL temperature will be recorded on the data sheet just before the test item is removed for testing.
Note: When performing the legacy standard, a 4.54 kg (10 lb) weight can be placed on a 38- x 38-cm (15- x 15-in.) plate to distribute load to allow for maximum fluid penetration.
b. After completion of POL conditioning, the test item will be hung vertically to drip dry for length of time specified in the requirement document. If specified in the requirement document, excess POL will be wiped from the surface. The test item may be inserted into a resealable, plastic anti-static bag to facilitate handling of the test item from the conditioning room to the test fixture. The test item may remain in the anti-static bag throughout testing to limit fume and POL exposure.
c. First valid shot on target must be taken within 30 minutes from removal, with testing completed within 60 minutes after the first shot. If testing is not completed within 60 minutes, another test item will be conditioned as specified above and the testing will continue with the second item.
Unless a different method is specified in the test item requirements document, seawater will be prepared IAW ASTM International D1141-984. Completely submerge the test item in a seawater bath such that the fluid is in contact with all exterior surfaces to allow maximum fluid penetration. If using a pan, place a 4.54 kg (10 lb) weight on a 38- x 38-cm (15- x 15-in.) plate on top of the test item in order to completely submerge the test item. If using a sink tank, clamp the test item to the rack and lower vertically into the water to completely submerge the test item. Conditioning is completed at ambient temperature. The length of time for conditioning will be documented in the requirements document. The seawater temperature will be taken and recorded on the data sheet just before the test item is removed for testing.
b. After completion of seawater conditioning, excessive seawater will be drained from the test item by hanging it vertically for 15 minutes to allow it to drip dry. The test item will be ballistically impacted within 5 minutes after completion of the drip drying time.
c. If testing is not completed within 60 minutes after the first shot on target, a new, untested test item will be conditioned as specified above, and the testing will continue with the second test item. The second test item is also subject to test completion within 60 minutes after the first shot on target.

Unless directed otherwise by project documentation, temperature cycling tests will be performed in accordance with Method 503.7 of MIL-STD-810H, Procedure I-A. The extreme temperatures will be 48.9 and -31.7 °C (120 and -25 °F).
The test samples will be stabilized at the appropriate temperature for a minimum of 2 hours before cycling to the other temperatures. Test samples are subjected to ballistic testing after removal from the temperature chamber and post-conditioning X-ray analysis. Shot patterns may be adjusted in response to any noted degradation of the test sample.
The test plates will be conditioned for weather resistance in accordance with AATCC Test Method No. 169, with modifications.
-60 ± 10 °F for a minimum of 24 hours. After exposure, test personnel will remove the helmet from the chamber, mount it, and ballistically test it within 10 min with tests completed within 30 min after the first shot on target. If the ballistic test cannot be completed within 30 min and the helmet has been out of conditioning for 1 hr or less, the helmet will be reconditioned for 1 (+24, -0) hr. If the helmet has been out of conditioning for more than 1 hr, the helmet will be reconditioned 24 (+24, -0) hr.

Altitude
Vibration
The vibration test will simulate a loose cargo handling environment in accordance with MIL-STD-810H, Method 514.8, Procedure II. The hard armor will be inserted strike face down into a wooden box 25.4 mm larger than the hard armor insert in all directions. Only one hard armor insert may be tested in a wooden box, per trial. The wooden box will be secured on a vibration table such that the top and bottom of the insert is parallel to the x-axis of the vibration table with the vibration caused from motion in the y- and z-axis. Figure 4 illustrates the hard armor orientation on the vibration table. The simulation of the loose cargo environment imparts a 25.4 mm peak-to-peak, circular synchronous motion to the vibration table at a frequency of 5 Hz for 1 hour. After post-conditioning X-ray analysis, the hard armor insert will be subjected to ballistic testing at the conclusion of the vibration cycle. Shot patterns may be adjusted in response to any noted degradation of the test sample.
Unless a different method is specified in the test item’s requirements document, Procedure 1, Method 500.6 of MIL-STD- 810H, tailored as follows will be used for this test. The test samples will be placed in an ambient air pressure chamber to simulate a 12,200-meter (40,000-ft) altitude for 1 hour. The air pressure will then be changed to simulate a 4,600-meter
(15,000-ft) altitude for 1 hour. Upon completion of conditioning, a complete visual inspection will be performed. The change rate of the ambient air pressure is 460 to 610 m/min (1,500 to 2,000 ft/min). Test samples are subjected to ballistic testing after removal from the pressure chamber and post-conditioning X-ray analysis. Shot patterns may be adjusted in response to any noted degradation of the test sample.
