Appendix B: Guidelines for a Successful LO/MIT-II MAX Installation (From Coating Manufacturer)
· LO/MIT-II MAX is supplied ready to use. Mix thoroughly with a squirrel-cage or similar mixer for 2-5 minutes before spraying. Mix as frequently as practical during application to keep pigment well dispersed. Constant agitation is ideal. No thinning is required or suggested.
· Spray with any standard airless spray rig. Be sure to remove any filters from your sprayer. Filters may prevent some of the pigment from being applied.
· A self-cleaning, reversible 6-13 tip is recommended. Larger tip sizes may also be adequate depending on sprayer. LO/MIT-II MAX has a viscosity similar to water, so a smaller orifice can yield better coverage and lessen over-spray. A reversible, self-cleaning tip helps keep the orifice clear from potential clogging.
· Use low pressure (if adjustable) when spraying LO/MIT-II MAX, this will drastically reduce over-spray and yield better coverage.
· Practice spraying on some scrap wood to get comfortable with LO/MIT-II MAX and your particular sprayer. Coverage should be roughly 400 square feet per gallon.
· Wear a respirator and a cover-all suit as well as protective eyewear, especially when spraying in a closed attic.
· Keep spray area as well ventilated as possible for applicators. Powered fans/vents should be turned off while spraying so particulate isn’t blown onto the roof/gable ends. Smell should dissipate fully within a few hours depending on ventilation conditions in attic.
· LO/MIT-II MAX will dry to about a half a mil thickness. A good rule of thumb when spraying is to coat the plywood or OSB to yield a contiguous silver surface, but it should be thin enough to still see the grain of the wood.
· Spray all radiating surfaces of the roof, including the roof trusses. Gable ends may also be coated. Extension wands can be helpful spraying in tight areas such as the eaves.
· LO/MIT-II MAX is a one-coat application. Applying a second coat will not increase efficiency.
· Check your work! Be sure to shine a bright work light or flash light over the sprayed areas to verify adequate coverage. Any areas applied too lightly or missed will not reflect the light back to you.
· LO/MIT-II MAX has a slow cure! LO/MIT-II MAX will skin dry within a few minutes but can remain soft for several weeks to months. LO/MIT-II will cure quickly at ambient temperatures. Curing rates will vary based on time, temperature and humidity conditions present.
