About this file

This amendment to a federal solicitation provides additional information for a dredging project in Scarborough, Maine. Hydraulic dredging of approximately 111,000 cubic yards of sandy material from channels and an anchorage is required, to be pumped and placed on a nearby beach. The work includes dredging 76,000 cubic yards to authorized depths and an additional 35,000 cubic yards of allowable overdepth. Dredging and disposal operations must occur between November 1, 2023 and March 1, 2024 to comply with environmental time of year restrictions. A site visit attendee list is provided, as well as responses to requested information on issues such as boat access before dredging begins, placement site grading requirements, channel current speeds, beach placement direction, and survey requirements.

Requests For Information

1. Can we place boats in the water before prior to the dredging schedule start date?

Yes, boats can be in the water before the dredging schedule start date. However, the contractor should coordinate with the Town of Scarborough Harbormaster to ensure boats have adequate mooring/dockage.

2. Is there a set slope for the placement site? Grading?

Refer to Sheet C-104 and Specification Section 25 20 23 "DREDGING AND DREDGED MATERIAL PLACEMENT" subpart 2.5.5 "GRADING.”

3. What is the water speed through the channel?

Reference NOAA tides and currents information at https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaacurrents/ and contact the harbormaster for local information.

4. Is there a specified direction of beach placement (i.e. north to south)?

Refer to Sheet C-104, Note 2.

5. Can progress surveys conducted by the contractor's licensed hydrographic surveyor’s surveys be used for project acceptance, or are government surveys required to follow contractor surveys for verification and approval?

Specification Section 01 73 10 "FIELD ENGINEERING FOR DREDGING" outlines the contractor and government survey requirements. Government surveys are required following contractor surveys for government acceptance.

6. Has the Government identified any “hot spots” or special considerations?

To minimize sloughing of sandy material in areas requiring deeper cuts, the design incorporates more gentle side slopes in certain areas of the channel. Refer to Sheet C-301 for typical sections and note on channel side slopes.
