GEOGRID
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
The work covered by this section of the specifications consists of furnishing all labor, equipment, supplies, materials, tools, and incidentals to furnish and install a geogrid-reinforced mat base as specified.
1.2 REFERENCES
The publications listed below form a part of this specification to the extent referenced. The publications are referred to within the text by the basic designation only.
ASTM INTERNATIONAL (ASTM)
ASTM D 4595 (1986; R 2001) Tensile Properties of Geotextiles by the Wide-Width Strip Method

1.3 SUBMITTALS
Government approval is required for submittals with a "G" designation;
submittals not having a "G" designation are for information only. When used, a designation following the "G" designation identifies the office that will review the submittal for the Government. The following shall be submitted in accordance with Section 01 33 00 SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES:
SD-03 Product Data
Geogrid
Submit manufacturer's written descriptive literature, specifications, performance test data, instructions, installation recommendations and repair procedures for the geogrid.
SECTION 31 05 21 Page 2
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
2.1.1 Geogrid
The material shall be a polymer grid structure specifically manufactured for use as soil reinforcement with high tensile strength in two perpendicular directions (biaxial). The geogrid must be evaluated based on testing of the total structure and not based on simply adding the values of the individual components. The geogrid shall meet the following minimum average roll value (MARV) criteria (ASTM D 4759):
PHYSICAL PROPERTY TEST METHOD MINIMUM AVG. ROLL VALUE
As Measured by Calibers
Aperture Size --- 0.5 to 2.0 in.
Min. Open Area ASTM D 4751 50 to 80 percent Min. Strength ASTM D 4595 @2% Strain 280 lb/ft @5% Strain 580 lb/ft Node Junction Strength GSI GRI GC7 500 lb/ft Tensile Modulus GSI GRI GG1 14,000 lb/ft
In machine and cross machine directions, no offset allowance nor preloading permitted.
2.1.2 Mat Base
Mat base material shall be as specified in Section 31 01 00: DIKE
EMBANKMENT.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
The geogrid materials shall be packaged, shipped, stored and handled ensuring that no damage is incurred. Materials shall be delivered only after the required submittals have been received and approved by the Contracting Officer. The Contractor shall be responsible for keeping the geogrid free of dirt, dust, soil, or any other foreign materials. The geogrid shall be protected from ultraviolet exposure during manufacture, shipping and at all storage locations. The geogrid shall not be exposed to ultraviolet light for more than 14 days. All geogrid material found to be damaged shall be replaced with new material at the Contractor's expense.
Each roll shall be labeled with the Manufacturer's name, product identification, lot number, roll number, and roll dimensions.
3.2 PLACEMENT
The Contractor shall furnish to the Contracting Officer the manufacturer's written installation procedures for the geogrid upon delivery of this material to the site. Placement shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's installation procedures or modifications thereto as approved by the Contracting Officer, as required to ensure that the geogrid provides total coverage of the existing ground within the required placement limits.
SECTION 31 05 21 Page 3
3.2.1 Clearing
Clearing of the dike embankment footprint area to accept the geogrid shall be as specified in Section 31 11 00.10: CLEARING.
3.2.2 Geogrid
After the footprint area has been cleared as specified and approved by the Contracting Officer, the Contractor shall place the geogrid directly upon the cleared surface leaving it relatively smooth and free from excessive undulations. The geogrid shall be unrolled in a direction perpendicular to the centerline of the embankment and overlapped 3 feet along the sides and ends of adjacent geogrids. Due to the soft nature of the existing ground it may be necessary to physically tie adjacent geogrids to each other to ensure proper overlap after placement of the layer of coarse-grained material.
3.2.3 Mat Base
After the geogrid has been placed as specified, coarse-grained material shall be placed carefully upon it. Equipment used to place and distribute the coarse-grained material shall comply with the requirements specified in Section 31 01 00: DIKE EMBANKMENT, paragraph EQUIPMENT, subparagraphs "Dike Embankment" and "Mat Base". The total thickness of the cohesionless mat base layer shown in the plans shall be placed in a single lift to minimize disturbance of the underlying geogrid and foundation by the equipment.
Care shall be taken that the leading edge of the coarse-grained layer be at least 20 feet from a geogrid end-lap position at the end of the daily operations.
3.2.4 Repairs to Geogrid
Repairs to the geogrid shall be made in accordance with the manufacturer's repair procedures. The Contractor shall furnish the Contracting Officer the manufacturer's written repair procedure upon delivery of the geogrid to the site.
3.3 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
Measurement for payment for work required by this section of the specifications shall be made of the actual total surface area in square yards covered by the geogrid as shown in the contract drawings. Final quantities of geogrid shall be based on as-built conditions. No allowance will be made for waste, overlap, or materials used for the convenience of the Contractor. Geogrid installed and accepted by the Contracting Officer will be paid for at the contract unit price for "INSTALL GEOGRID" as listed in the bidding schedule. Payment for the construction of the mat base shall be as specified in Section 31 01 00: DIKE EMBANKMENT.
-- End of Section --
SECTION 31 05 21 Page 4
2.1.2 Seam Strength Testing
The Contractor shall collect samples of field and factory sewn seams and arrange for laboratory strength testing in accordance with ASTM D4884. All samples shall be tested to verify that the geotextile meets the requirements specified.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 SURFACE PREPARATION
The underlying surface to receive the geotextile shall be prepared to a relatively smooth condition free of tire ruts, erosion gullies, obstructions, depressions and debris.
3.2 PLACEMENT
The Contractor shall furnish to the Contracting Officer or his/her designated representative the manufacturer's written installation procedures for the geotextile upon delivery of this material to the site.
The Contractor shall visually inspect all rolls of geotextile for damage and imperfections prior to its placement. Damaged and defective rolls of geotextile shall be marked and repaired as required. The Contractor shall place the geotextile in accordance with the manufacturer's installation procedures and as specified herein. Panels of geotextile shall be cut using a hot knife. Each panel shall be oriented with the long dimension (machine direction) perpendicular to the centerline of the dike embankment within a tolerance of 5 degrees. The geotextile shall be laid flat and smooth to minimize tension, stress, folds, wrinkles, and creases. Sections displaced by wind or other occurrences shall be approved by the Contracting Officer or his/her designated representative prior to their use. New geotextile to new geotextile shall overlap 3-feet. New geotextile to existing geotextile shall overlap 10-feet. New to new and new to existing geotextile seams are not required to be sewn.
Geotextile shall be placed during reconstruction of the dike embankment at Spillway 7 as shown on the drawings.
