About this file

This is a series of presentation slides from an Industry Day event for a Remedial Action Construction (RAC) IDIQ contract opportunity at the Iron King Mine - Humboldt Smelter Superfund Site in Dewey-Humboldt, AZ. The contract, with Notice ID W912PL25S0009, has a ceiling value of $249M with individual task orders ranging from $1M to $50M over a 60-month period of performance.

The project involves environmental cleanup of two contaminated areas separated by Highway 69: the former Iron King Mine (1910-1968) on the west side with a 120-foot high, 4 million cubic yard tailings pile, and the former Humboldt Smelter (late 1800s-1937) on the east side containing mine waste, dross, contaminated soils and slag. The work requires excavation, transport and consolidation of contaminated materials into two newly constructed repositories (one on each side of the highway), with no waste crossing the highway. The primary NAICS code is 237990 (Other Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction), with several secondary NAICS codes identified for subcontracting opportunities including site preparation, concrete work, freight trucking, masonry, utilities, and engineering services. Key dates include an Industry Day on January 28, 2025 and Sources Sought submissions due February 11, 2025. The project is a collaboration between the US Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and the EPA.

IRON KING MINE - HUMBOLDT SMELTER

INDUSTRY DAY INTRODUCTION

• Decades ago, the former Iron King Mine (1910 – 1968) and former Humboldt Smelter (late 1800s to 1937) left behind millions of tons of mining wastes including mine tailings and other types of wastes in Dewey-Humboldt.

• At the former mine on the west side of AZ State Route, Highway 69 (highway), a 120-foot high 4 million-cubic yard tailings pile remains that is high in arsenic and lead.

• The former smelter on the east side of the highway contains mine waste, waste dross, extensive contaminated soils, and a wall of monolithic slag hanging over a river.

• The contaminated Chaparral Gulch drainage between the mine and the smelter contains a flood plain filled with tailings and held back by a dam, as well as buried alluvium mixed with tailings.

• At the former mine on the west side of the highway there is a 120-foot high 4 million-cubic yard tailings pile remains that is high in arsenic and lead. On the east side of the highway, 1.1 million-cubic yard tailings pile remains that is also high in arsenic and lead.

• The remedy will require widespread excavation, transport, disposal and consolidation of wastes into two newly constructed and permanently capped repositories, one on each side of the highway. No waste will cross the highway during remediation.
