SECTION 01 11 00

SUMMARY OF WORK

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS

1.1.1 Project Description

The work consists of widening and deepening the Murrieta Creek flood control channel from just below 1st Street (Sta. 59+00) to just below Rancho California Rd bridge.(Sta. 102+00). From Sta.98+00 to Sta. 102+00, the channel section will consist of a riprap lined slope protection covered with miscellaneous landscape fill. Side slopes will be 3H:1V. Downstream of Sta.98+00, the channel section will consist of a soil cement embankment, the majority of the reach having side slopes of 1H:4V. The contractor will be responsible to compact to specification the full width of the 12-foot wide section and will need to develop procedures to do so safely. In addition, shoring will be required in some reaches to construct the soil cement section within the existing right-of-way. Due to the right-of-way limits, the specifications include limitations on the duration and length that excavations may remain open. The channel width varies from 140 feet to 205 feet with the designated riparian corridor varying in width from 35 feet to 70 feet.

The excavation will generate excess material, including a substantial quantity of debris. Debris includes trash, concrete, reinforced concrete, asphalt, riprap, grouted stone, and other miscellaneous construction debris. All excess excavated material shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be disposed of at approved off site disposal sites or the optional disposal site at no additional cost to the Government.

It is the anticipation of the Government that there is sufficient and generally appropriate material from the required excavation to meet the aggregate requirements for the soil cement, though the data indicates that the contractor will need likely need to supplement the required excavation with aggregate coarser than the number 4 sieve in order to meet the contract specifications. The most appropriate material will come from the Qa (active alluvium within the bottom of the streambed); the older alluvium (from channel side slopes) is typically too fine. Some selective excavation will be required.

A 15 feet wide maintenance road will be constructed on both sides of the channel. Surfacing will be either asphalt paving or decomposed granite.

Grading along the landward side of the maintenance road will collect localized flows and drop into storm drains. A number of storm drains discharge into Murrieta Creek. The work includes connecting to the drains and constructing new outlet structures within the slopes. Two types of landscaping included in this project, one type is the environmental plantings and hydroseeding for the riparian corridor and side slopes within the channel. The other type is the esthetic treatment that is located on top of the banks, outside of the channel, but within the existing right-of-way.
