b. Trenches. Trenches shall be of the necessary width for the proper laying of the pipes and electric cables, and the banks shall be as nearly vertical as practicable. The bottom shall be accurately graded so as to provide bearing for the pipe on firm soil. The clear space between the pipe and the trenches wall shall not exceed 8" (20 cm.) on either side of the pipe. Further excavation will be required for housing and sealing of pipe joints. In proximity of buildings, existing underground utility lines, and wherever specifically requested in other sections of these specifications or on drawing notes, trenches shall be excavated manually.

c. Excavation for Foundation and Appurtenances. Excavation for manholes and similar structures shall be of sufficient dimensions as to leave a 12 inches (30 cm.) free space between their outer surfaces and the embankment or timber which may be used to hold the banks.

3b-02 BACKFILLING. Trenches shall not be backfilled until foundation, pipes or cables have been inspected and approved. Where, in the opinion of the COR, damage is likely to result from withdrawing of shoring, the latter shall be left in place. Trenches shall be backfilled with the excavated materials, if deemed suitable, free from large clods of earth, stones, and roots.

Backfilling material shall be deposited in 15 cm. (6") layers, thoroughly rammed until the trench is completely covered, and watered as necessary. Any material rejected by COR shall be replaced with material acceptable to the COR, coming from borrow pits located outside the US military base.

3b-03 REPAIRS. All crossings of existing paved or asphalt coated surfaces shall be cut neatly vertical and horizontal. At the completion of the work, pavement and sidewalks shall be restored to the original conditions. Damaged lawns shall be sown again and damaged plants shall be replaced with others of the same kinds. Any damage caused during the work progress shall be repaired by and at the expense of the Contractor. The Contractor shall be responsible also for injuries caused to persons as a result of non-compliance with prescribed ISPESL norms.

NOTE: In addition to above requirements, before starting the excavation, the Contractor must investigate with a metal detector furnished by himself the location of existing underground utility lines, e.g. electrical, communications, water, TV lines, or any other utility which may not be shown on the existing condition drawings, in order to prevent damaging or interrupting any existing utility. Investigation shall be done in the presence of the COR. Trial runs shall be done with the metal detector in the presence of the COR or his representative prior to the investigation.

Investigation shall be done following COR approval of metal detector. The Contractor shall mark-up on a copy of the existing conditions the exact field location of the existing utility lines which are found during excavation. This copy shall then be submitted to the COR. Excavation work performed close to existing utility lines shall be done by hand within a 3 meter radius.

a. Prior to aggregate spreading and shaping, the subbase shall be highly and uniformly sprinkled up to optimum moisture content, if deemed necessary by the COR, so as to facilitate settlement of the base course lower material during the first few trips of the compressor.

Additional sprinkling, necessary during rolling to obtain settlement and appropriate density of the finished base course, shall be effected in the presence of the COR. Rolling shall start from the edges of the hardstand to the center area of same by parallel passages, each preceding track being at least 20 cm. overlapped by the following. Layers of course aggregate thicker than 12

cm. prior to compaction shall not be rolled.

b. The saturation material shall be of same nature as the material used for the base course, i.e. essentially dry and free from organic or clayey matters. The use of material shall be regulated in such a manner that voids filling in the top section of the layer, to a few centimeters depth, is such as to allow perfect bond of the subsequent bituminous concrete layer. The number of rolling coverages shall be as necessary to obtain thorough compaction, depending upon the quality and hardness of the material used.

11a-06 SEMIPENETRATION TREATMENT-HOT LAID ASPHALT. When the finished roadway has been rolled, it shall receive a uniform layer of 180-200 asphalt, heated at 180 degrees C, applied by pressure distributors at a rate of 2.5 kg/square meter.

11a-07 SEMI-OPEN ASPHALT CONCRETE COURSE. The aggregate to be used for asphalt concrete shall consist of very hard crushed rock, shall have a minimum compressive strength of 1250 kg/sq.cm., shall be of the gradation indicated below, and shall not be readily wet by water. Fine aggregate shall consist of natural sand or sand obtained from siliceous crushed stone. The admixture shall meet the requirements of CNR. Solid or liquid bitumen shall be as specified by the "Norme per l'accettazione dei bitumi per usi stradali" (standard for acceptance of bitumens for road work), Pamphlet 2 of CNR (1951).

MIX PERCENTAGE BY WEIGHT

Siliceous sand 25%

Aggregate - size 2-7 mm. 15%

5-10 mm. 20%

10-15 mm. 16%

15-18 mm. 20%

Bitumen 4-5%

When viscosity type cut-back asphalt is used, the admixture shall be added to a percentage ranging between 2% and 3% of the total weight. When solid high penetration asphalt is used, the aggregate material shall be dried and heated beforehand at a temperature of 120-160 degrees C and the dust removed. The material shall be hauled and spread in such a manner as to avoid excessive heat loss and to prevent the mix from being altered or soiled. Variations in the mixture shall not exceed 1% for asphalt and 10% for each aggregate grading. When concrete is spread manually, the ordinary methods shall be followed using steel rakes. Concrete shall be rolled by quick reverse type rollers weighing no less than 5 tons. Roller wheels shall be sprinkled with water to prevent pick up of the bituminous material. Rolling shall progress gradually from the edges of the hardstand to the center. The first trips shall be run with particular care to avoid the danger of waves or cracks in the course. When the course has settled, the roller shall be run transversely over the surface. Rolling shall stop upon compaction. All edges and borders around the paved surface and its single sections, such as joints where work is resumed, lateral curbs, underground utility outlets, etc., prior to receiving the asphalt concrete course, shall be coated with one layer of asphalt to insure full waterproofing and adhesion of the parts. All joints and borders shall be tamped and hand finished by special rectangular base type tampers.

Irregularities or waves on any point of the finished surface shall not exceed 5 mm.

11a-08 WEARING COURSE. The pavement shall be completed by application of a hot-laid close type asphalt concrete course. The size and quality of coarse and fine aggregate, sand, and admixture shall be as described in paragraph 11a-09. After adding the admixture, the voids in the total mix aggregate material shall not exceed 20-22% of the total volume. When mixed, the bitumen shall have a penetration value of 80-100 (or even up to 120), and its contents in the mixture shall be 6-7.5% of the dry aggregate weight. The maximum allowed percentage of voids shall be 5%. Aggregate shall be preheated at a temperature not to exceed 120 degrees C, and the binder 130 degrees C. The mix proportions shall be as follows:

a. Coarse aggregate From 40% to 60% (3-15 mm.)

b. Fine aggregate From 25% to 40% (sand grain spassing 2 mm. sieve)

c. Admixture From 4% to 10% (asphalt powder passing 0.297 sieve)

d. Bitumen From 5% to 8%.

When the base surface has received an emulsified asphalt layer at the rate of 1 kg/square meter, the mix shall be hot-laid in the quantity necessary to attain the final required thickness. The course shall then be rolled as specified in paragraph 11a-07. The finished surface shall be coated with hot-laid asphalt applied at the rate of 0.700 kg/square meter, and the remaining voids filled with asphalt powder and by rolling.

The rolling will be executed with the number of times (in any case not fewer than 20) deemed necessary to obtain perfect compaction according to the quality and hardness of the material used.
