1. WARRANTY - MWI manufactured pumps are guaranteed by Moving Water Industries, hereinafter called the Company, so far as the same are of its own manufacture, against defects in material and workmanship, under normal use and service for a period of 15 months from the date of shipment from the factory, or 3000 hours running time, or 12 months from the completion of “start up” whichever comes first. The Company’s obligation is limited to furnishing without charge, excluding freight charges, parts to replace any similar parts of its own manufacture which are proved to be defective within the time limits or operational terms above, provided the purchaser has given the Company immediate written notice upon discovery of such defect.
The Company assumes no liability for damages or delays caused by defective materials and no allowance will be made for local repair bills or expenses without the prior written approval or authority of the Company.
The Company will guarantee accessory equipment or components supplied but not manufactured by the Company to the same extent that the guarantee is made by the manufacturer or supplier of such equipment. Immediate written notice of defects is required.
The warranty provided by the Company for its own manufactured equipment or for accessory equipment or components manufactured by others is contingent upon the equipment being properly shipped, stored, installed and operated in accordance with the design and instructions provided.
2. PERFORMANCE GUARANTEES are based on shop laboratory tests corrected for field performance in accordance with the engineering practices outlined in the Standards of the Hydraulic Institute. The performance guarantee is at the specified point of rating only, and will not cover performance under conditions varying therefrom. The Company is not responsible for any special indirect or consequential damages in case of failure to meet the conditions of any warranty, or for any damages arising from the use of its products.
3. ACCEPTANCE TESTS, if required, shall be conducted in accordance with and subject to the limitations set forth in the Standards of the Hydraulic Institute. The expense of any such test shall be borne by the purchaser. Due to the inaccuracies of field-testing, the results of any such tests conducted by or for the purchaser shall be interpreted as being only indicative of the actual field performance of the pump. No equipment shall be furnished on the basis of acceptance by results of field tests. If the purchaser, after such a test, questions the performance of the pump, he may at his option request tests to establish the performance. Such tests will be conducted in accordance with paragraph 2 and subject to the limitations of paragraphs 2, 3, and 4. If the tests conducted in this manner establish the performance as being within the guarantee, then all expenses involved shall be borne by the purchaser.
4. ALL WARRANTIES or guarantees are void if (a) pump is handling liquids other than clear, fresh, non-aerated water at a temperature not exceeding 85 degrees F., or liquids other than as specified by the primary design and purchase order; (b) pump has been handling sand or other abrasive material and if inspection indicates wear or erosion from such use; (c) operating speed is other than that of design condition; (d) installation of the pump is made in such a manner as to create shaft misalignment; (e) the Total Dynamic Head is exceeded or minimum submergence (low water level) is less than as specified by the primary design and purchase order; (f) lubrication and service maintenance instructions are not followed; or (g) damage to any component including the pump in a diesel, direct-drive lineshaft pumping system is caused by torsional vibration, unless the Company provided the entire system; (h) damage due to foreign objects; (i) damage due to cavitation.
5. The Company is not responsible for hydraulic disturbances, including, but not limited to, vortexes and cavitation which are generated from sump designs. The Company neither designs sumps nor provides consulting services to others on proposed sump designs. Consequently, the Company accepts no responsibility whatsoever for sump design, repair or modification of a sump, or any reduction in performance due to sump design.

SECTION 2 – STORAGE
2.1 Storage of Pumps
Pumps Stored Less Than One Month
Normally there is no need to do anything if the pump will be stored less than one month. If the equipment will be subject to high humidity or airborne gases that may be corrosive then consult your lubrication specialist to determine the proper preservatives to apply.
Pumps Stored More Than One Month
Pumps stored for a period greater than one month must be stored properly to preserve and protect all parts of the pump. The following procedure should be used to store the pump.
Procedures for properly storing the motors, engines, gear drives, drive shafts, etc. should be obtained from the respective manufacturer’s manuals.
1. The storage area must be level and not subject to flooding.
2. All unpainted machined surfaces and exposed areas of the shaft should be coated with a rust preventative.
3. The pump should be inspected periodically to see if additional rust preventive is required.
4. Manually spin the propeller about 12 turns.
Do not use your bare hand, it could become caught in the blades. Use a wooden object to turn the propeller
NOTE:
In order to avoid possible warranty storage issues, MWI recommends installing and commissioning submersible electric pumps within (6) months of delivery.
If stored for longer than six months MWI recommends that a log be kept to keep track of the storage procedure intervals.
The pump should be stored in the position that it was shipped. When raising a pump from the horizontal to vertical position lift along the plane of the lifting loop to avoid bending it.
NOTE:
Stainless steel components do not require painting or rust preventatives.
MWI Corporation 3.1.1-S
SECTION 3 – INSTALLATION
3.1 Pump Installation
1. Clean sump of all debris
2. With a sufficient lifting device, lower the discharge columns into the sump until the adjustable stand rests on the sump floor.
3. If the pump uses a base plate, lower until the base plate rests on the concrete surface
4. For pumps with a base plate, shim base plate to align flange on discharge elbow. Once the flange is bolted, fill the resulting gap below the base plate with a non-shrink grout and install the anchor bolts.
5. For pumps that utilize stands, Adjust stand to proper fit, then secure the discharge column to the discharge pipe spool in the sump wall. Complete the discharge piping assembly by connecting any additional valves or flap gates to the discharge pipe. Check specified clearances from the sump back and side walls, intake clearance, and spacing between pumps where applicable.
6. If power is available, correct pump rotation should be established by running the pump dry. This task must be performed by a certified electrician.
With the pump resting on a secure flat surface, “bump” the motor by engaging and instantly disengaging the starter.
When viewing from above, verify clockwise pump rotation. Using a Phase Rotational Meter, clockwise rotation across motor leads T1, T2 and T3 will also confirm proper pump rotation.
7. The wires should be marked and coded for the correct rotation.
8. Thoroughly clean the seal located on the intake bell.
9. Clean the sealing surface at the bottom of the discharge can using a brush attached to a pole of sufficient length.
10. Lower the water pump into the discharge can utilizing the guide rails welded into the discharge can to align with the notches in the upper venturi of the water pump.
11. Raise the water pump using the lifting loop. When lifting the pump from a horizontal to a vertical position, take care not to drag or slide the bowl assembly
12. If conduit is used in your application, partially lower pump into can, feed the conduit over the electric cables and secure the conduit to the water pump. If more than one section of conduit is used, couple the sections together as the assembly is lowered into the discharge can.
13. Continue to lower the water pump inside the discharge can and ensure that one side of the water pump does not drag unevenly along the inside of the discharge can.
14. After the water pump “bottoms out”, raise and lower the water pumps several times to be sure that the water pump is resting on the seal and any loose debris is dislodged.
15. If the lifting cable is used as a messenger cable then the electrical cables must be secured to the lifting cable using wire tie wraps at 3 foot intervals. After installation the lifting cable must be pulled tight and secured to the upper eye bolt in the discharge
MWI Corporation 3.1.1-S can. The eye bolt is installed after the pump is lowered into the discharge can.
16. Attach the lifting cable (if supplied) to the side of the discharge can. The cable should be firmly secured and taut to prevent the cable from “whipping around” during the pumping cycle.
17. Attach discharge tube lid with hardware and gaskets.
18. For cables and conduit, install conduit grommet seal.
19. If required, install the balance of the carrier pipe to the junction box in a non wetted area.
Refer to the Electric Motor Data Specifications table for specific lead identification.
1. Leads with a “T” prefix are motor power leads.
2. Leads with a “W” prefix are moisture detection leads.
3. Leads with a “P” prefix are stator or bearing winding thermostat sensor leads.
4. Make sure that all ground cables (bond wires) are grounded properly.
Additional Notes:
1. The electrical installation shall be done by a certified electrician.
2. Pumps are pre-lubricated at the factory and do not require additional lubrication at start up.
3. Wiring diagram included at the end of O&M manual.
3.2 Adjustments
1. There are no mechanical adjustments required for the installation.
CAUTION:
If the motor leads are connected incorrectly:
a. The motor could be damaged.
b. The motor will rotate in reverse direction causing the pump to rise in the can. Phase rotation must be counter-clockwise across T1, T2 and T3 for proper rotation
c. This can damage the installation and/or cause injury to the crew.
MWI Corporation 4.1.1-S
SECTION 4 – OPERATION
Section 5.1 of this manual states that a record be kept of periodic inspections and maintenance on each pump. Proper maintenance procedures are the best insurance against costly breakdowns. If the pump is not required to run for several months then the pump should be exercised every two months. The following check list should be performed before starting the pump for the first time or after removal from storage.
4.1 Pretest/Prestart Check List
1. Be sure the motor is prevented from starting by locking the electric power off line.
2. Check the water level in the sump for the required submergence. Be sure sump is clear of foreign objects that could obstruct the flow to the pump or could be pulled into the suction bell of the pump. For the minimum water level see the general arrangement drawing in section 7 (see table of contents for applicable drawing number).
3. Check the motor wiring connections and lubricant levels. Confirm that the voltage, phase and frequency of the line circuit matches with the rating requirements of the motor. Refer to additional Installation, Operation and Maintenance Instructions in section 8 as applicable.
4. Proceed to the Operation Instruction “Pump Start” in section 4.2.
NOTE:
For unmanned pump operation, a low water level shutdown system must be utilized.
MWI Corporation 4.2.1-S
4.2 Pump Start
1. Refer to Safety Precautions in section 1.2.
2. For unmanned pump operation, a low water level shutdown system should be utilized to avoid any damage to the pump due to insufficient pump submergence.
3. Perform the prestart tasks listed in section 4.1.
4. Review the Motor and Starter Operation Instructions.
5. On initial start up only, bump the motor by engaging and instantly disengaging the starter while observing for smooth operation, proper alignment and direction of rotation.
Pump should rotate clockwise when viewing from above.
6. Energize the motor and allow the pump to operate at design speed. Frequently check for smooth operation of the pump/motor assembly during initial operation.
7. Check and record the voltage and amperage per phase, and kilowatts if a meter is available.
8. Check that recorded data does not exceed name plate rating.
CAUTION:
If repeated starts are made, allow sufficient time between starts for the motor to cool down. Pump motors generally allow only 2 starts per hour. Refer to the motor operation and maintenance instructions 8.
WARNING:
Running the pump in the reverse rotation may cause the pump to rise in the discharge can, resulting in possible damage to the pump and the pump station. Make sure to verify proper rotation as described in step 5 prior to pump usage.
MWI Corporation 4.3.1-S
4.3 Pump Shut Down
1. Follow the Motor and Starter Operation Instructions and de-energize the motor.
2. As the pump/motor assembly comes to a stop, water will begin to backflow through the pump. If the motor is not equipped with a non-reverse device the pump/motor will spin backwards until the water has drained out of it.
3. For the protection of the motor during freezing weather see the motor instruction manual.
NOTE:
The pump must not be started while spinning backwards.
MWI Corporation 5.1.1-S
SECTION 5 – MAINTENANCE
5.1 Introduction
Operating conditions vary so widely that to recommend one schedule of preventive maintenance for all pumps is not possible. Yet, some sort of regular inspection should be followed on any mechanical equipment.
A direct drive submersible electric pump does not require any periodic maintenance since the bearings are grease packed for the life of the bearing and the shaft seals are lubricated by oil.
The oil is monitored by a relay supplied with the pump. A major inspection may be required should this relay trip and activate an alarm. This relay monitors leakage into the motor housing and junction box in addition to the oil.
By making regular and thorough inspections and following up with the appropriate repair or maintenance, the original design flow conditions of the pump can be maintained. If the needed service is carried out by a factory authorized facility, recertification of the pump's operating characteristics can be provided (consult the factory for details).
One of the best rules to follow in the proper maintenance of axial and mixed flow pumps is to keep a record of the actual operating hours.
Then, after a predetermined period of operation, the pump should be given a thorough inspection.
The length of operating time can be determined from experience. New equipment should be examined after a relatively short period of operation. Subsequent periods can be lengthened somewhat until a maximum period of operation is reached. This should then be considered the operating schedule between inspections.
Following is a chart showing our recommended maintenance inspection intervals.

A visual inspection of the pump should be done periodically. By maintaining a scheduled visual inspection major damage can be avoided.
1. Check the pump vibration. Excessive vibration denotes trouble and should be investigated immediately. Refer to the troubleshooting guide in section 6.1.
2. Listen for abnormal sounds.
3. If the amperage to the pump can be safely measured, record the amperage.
Inspection – Major
The major inspection of the pump shall be performed at the factory or by a facility authorized to do so. For critical applications, the user may want to periodically remove the pump to check for corrosion or other damage. Frequency of pump removal will be dependant on water / sump conditions and the possible impact of a sudden shutdown alarm or other malfunction. This will vary from pump station to pump station.
In less critical applications the first inspection can be delayed until the pump exhibits characteristics different from the established norm; such as excessive vibration, noise, increase in current, reduced flow rate or an alarm light is activated. Periodically recording the currents and voltages in the maintenance log can assist in determining when an inspection is required.
If the pump inspection reveals wear or damage, it is suggested that the…
