1.5.1 General
The Contractor shall inspect all materials before they are incorporated into the work for compliance with contract requirements and any material found to be defective will be rejected. All information pertaining to the inspection shall be recorded and included in quality control reports furnished the Contracting Officer. The Contractor shall establish and maintain quality control for construction operations to assure compliance with contract requirements, and maintain records of his/her quality control for all construction operations. The quality control reports shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
(1) Equipment. Type, size, and suitability for construction of the prescribed work.
SECTION 31 37 00.01 12 Page 6
(2) Submission of riprap samples for quality testing, if from other than the listed sources, as specified in paragraph "Materials".
(3) Quality of riprap meets the requirements specified.
(4) Quantity of riprap delivered and placed each day.
(5) Gradation of Riprap. Gradation tests of riprap shall be accomplished at the quarry. Tests by weight shall be made by the Contractor in the presence of the Contracting Officer's representative. The Contractor shall notify the Contracting Officer not less than 3 working days in advance of each test. In the event of non-availability of the Government representative, the Contractor shall perform the tests and certify to the Contracting Officer that the riprap shipped complies with the specifications. A minimum of one test shall be performed for each 25,000 tons, or fraction thereof, of riprap supplied to the Government from each source. Each test sample shall not be less than 15 tons and shall be representative of the riprap being shipped. Percentage determinations shall be made for each riprap weight specified. Gradation test data shall be recorded on MVN form 602-R "Gradation Test Data Sheet", a copy of which is shown at the end of this section. Failure of the test on the initial sample and on an additional sample will be considered cause for rejection of the quarry and/or quarry process, and all riprap represented by the failed tests shall be set aside and not incorporated into the work. Any additional tests required because of the failure of an initial test sample will not be considered as one of the other required tests. Certification and test results shall represent riprap shipped from the quarry and must be received by the Government representative before the riprap is used in the work. The Contractor shall designate on the test form that portion (in tons) of the lot tested which is applicable to this contract. Any deviation from the reported tonnage shall be corrected on a revised gradation test form. The Contracting Officer may direct, under Section 00700 INSPECTION FOR CONSTRUCTION (FAR 52.246-12), additional testing of riprap furnished to the worksite if the riprap appears, by visual inspection, to be of questionable gradation or quality. Refer to paragraph MVN STANDARD TEST METHOD FOR GRADATION OF STONE for the gradation test method.
(6) Compliance Surveys. Upon completion of suitable reaches of erosion protection, the Contractor shall perform, plot and submit compliance cross section surveys at a maximum of 50 feet intervals, showing transitions and breakpoints. All sections shall be taken at locations corresponding to the Government original survey. 1.6 MVN STANDARD TEST METHOD FOR GRADATION OF STONE
1.6.1 General
1.6.1.1 Sample Selection
The most important part of the test and the least precise is the selection of a representative sample. No "standard" can be devised; larger quarry run stone is best sampled at the shot or muck pile by given direction to the loader; small graded stone is best sampled by random selection from the transporting vehicles. If possible, all parties should take part in the sample selection, and agree before the sample is run, that the sample is representative.
1.6.1.2 Selection of Size for Separation
It is quite possible and accurate to run a gradation using any convenient sizes for separation, without reference to specifications. After the test is plotted on a curve, then the gradation limits may be plotted.
Overlapping gradations with this method are no problem. It is usually more convenient, however, to select points from the gradation limit, such as the minimum 50 percent size, the minimum 15 percent size, and one or two others, as separate points.
1.6.2 Procedure
(1) Select a representative sample (See paragraph "Sample Selection"), weigh and dump on hard stand.
(2) Select specific sizes (see example) on which to run "individual weight larger than" test. Procedure is similar to the standard aggregate gradation test for "individual weight retained".
(3) Determine the largest size stone in the sample. (100 percent size)
(4) Separate by "size larger than" the selected weights, starting with the larger sizes. Use reference stones, with identified weights, for visual comparison in separating the obviously "larger than" stones.
Stones that appear close to the specific weight must be individually weighed to determine size grouping. Weigh each size group, either individually or cumulatively.
(5) Subparagraph (4) will result in "individual weight retained" figures. Calculate individual percent retained. Fill-in and document the test on MVN Form 602-R.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS FOR RIPRAP AND GEOTEXTILE
(a) Geotextile Fabric: Geotextile fabric shall be placed on the prepared surface area or slope in accordance with Section 31 05 19.04 12 SEPARATOR GEOTEXTILE before placement of riprap. Care shall be taken not to damage the geotextile fabric when placing riprap. Placing riprap by rolling riprap down slope, or dropping riprap from a height greater than 1 foot from the bucket to the placement surface as required by ASTM D6825, or by similar methods likely to damage geotextile fabric, will not be permitted. Damaged geotextile fabric shall be repaired or replaced as directed by the Contracting Officer.
(b) Bedding Material: Areas on which bedding material and riprap is to be placed shall be graded to the required section. The bedding material shall be placed at the locations, thicknesses, and lines and grades shown on the drawings or as directed. The bedding material shall have a minimum thickness of 6 inches. It shall be placed on the prepared slope or area in a manner which will produce a reasonably well-graded mass of stone with a minimum practicable percentage of voids.
(c) Riprap: Areas on which riprap is to be placed shall be graded to the required section. Riprap shall be "R-650". The riprap shall be placed at the locations, thicknesses, and lines and grades shown on the drawings or as directed by the Contracting Officer's representative.
The riprap shall have a minimum thickness of 24 inches. It shall be placed on the prepared slope or area in a manner which will produce a reasonably well-graded mass of stone with a minimum practicable percentage of voids. The entire mass of stone shall be placed in one operation to conform to the lines, grades, and thickness to avoid displacing underlying material. Placing of riprap in layers, or dumping into chutes, or by similar methods likely to cause segregation, will not be permitted.
3.2 PRODUCING,CONVEYING AND PLACING OF GROUT
3.2.1 Producing Grout
The batching and mixing equipment shall provide sufficient capacity to prevent cold joints. Materials shall be stockpiled and batched by methods that will prevent segregation or contamination of aggregates and insure
SECTION 31 37 00.01 12 Page 14 accurate proportioning of the ingredients of the mixture. No mixing water in excess of the amount required by the approved mix shall be added to the grout mixture during mixing, hauling, or after arrival at the delivery point, except as approved. Grout shall be produced by a ready-mix facility and shall conform to ASTM C94/C94Mexcept as otherwise specified.
3.2.2 Preparation for Placing
Before placement, temporary end-dams or soil berms shall be placed as directed by the Contracting Officer's Representative to confine the grout.
The rock shall be flushed with water to remove the fines from the rock prior to placing the grout. The rock shall be kept moist just ahead of the actual placing, but no flowing or standing water shall be present during the grout operation. Snow and ice shall be removed. All equipment needed to place, protect, and cure the grout shall be at the placement site and in good operating condition. The entire preparation shall be accepted by the Contracting Office prior to placing the grout.
3.2.3 Conveying and Placing
Grout placement will not be permitted when weather conditions prevent proper placement. Submit the methods and equipment for transporting, handling, depositing, and consolidating the grout prior to the first grout placement. The grout mixture shall not be placed until the riprap has been inspected and approved. Grout shall be in place within 15 minutes after discharge from the mixer. When the grout is mixed and/or transported by a truck mixer, the grout shall be delivered to the site of the work and discharge shall be completed within 1-1/2 hours after introduction of the cement to the aggregate and water unless the slump flow is tested and the Contracting Officer's representative determines that the grout can still be placed. When the air temperature is 85 degrees F (or greater) or under conditions contributing to quick stiffening of the grout, an approved set-retarding admixture may be used. Grout shall be deposited as close as possible to its final position by methods that will prevent segregation of the aggregates or loss of mortar and in no case shall grout be dropped more than 5 feet vertically. The grout shall not be placed in standing or flowing water unless approved by the Contracting Officer. Grout placed on inverts or other nearly level areas may be placed in one course. On slopes, the grout shall be placed starting at the toe of the slope, starting on one end and proceeding horizontally until reaching the opposite end then returning to the starting end and proceeding up and across again in a logical progression up the slope. The grout shall be delivered to the place of final deposit and discharged directly on the surface of the riprap. The pump pressure shall be so regulated that the grout does not cause displacement of the riprap. If the Contracting Officer's representative determines that excessive displacement of riprap occurs, a splash plate of metal or wood shall be used to prevent displacement of the rock directly under the discharge. If necessary, the flow of grout shall be directed with brooms, spades or baffles to prevent it from flowing excessively along the same path and to assure that all intermittent spaces are filled. Sufficient barring shall be done to loosen tight pockets of riprap and otherwise aid the penetration of grout so that all voids shall be filled and the grout fully penetrates the riprap from the base of the riprap layer to at least two-thirds of the thickness of the stone layer. All brooming on slopes shall be uphill and after the grout has stiffened.
3.2.4 Placing Grout in Water
If placing grout in water is approved by the Contracting Officer, it shall
SECTION 31 37 00.01 12 Page 15 be done in accordance with the methods submitted to and approved by the Contracting Officer. Grout shall not be discharged to free fall into water.
One end of the placement should be dammed off to prevent flow. The placement should start on the dammed end. The discharge shall be placed in the water as near the bottom as possible. Once discharge starts, it shall be held stationary in the grout and the grout allowed to build up and flow from the discharge, displacing the water as it continues to flow. Once the grout builds to the desired elevation the discharge may be moved horizontally and be placed back into the grout to continue discharge. This shall continue until the placement is complete.
3.2.5 Cold-Weather Requirements
No grout placement shall be made when the ambient temperature is below 35 degrees F, nor if the ambient temperature is below 40 degrees F and falling. Suitable covering and other means, as approved, shall be provided for maintaining the grout at a temperature of at least 50 degrees F for not less than 72 hours after placing and at a temperature above freezing for the remainder of the curing period. The temperature of riprap shall be at least 40 degrees F prior to placing the grout. Salt, chemicals, or other foreign materials shall not be mixed with the grout to prevent freezing.
Any grout damaged by freezing shall be removed and replaced at the expense of the Contractor.
3.2.6 Hot Weather Requirements
When the rate of evaporation of surface moisture, as determined by use of Figure 4.1.4 of ACI 305R, is expected to exceed 0.2 pounds per square foot per hour, provisions for windbreaks, shading, fog spraying, or wet covering with a light-colored material shall be made in advance of placement, and such protective measures shall be taken as quickly as finishing operations will allow.
3.3 CURING AND PROTECTION OF GROUT
Beginning immediately after placement and continuing for at least 7 days, all grout shall be cured and protected from premature drying, extremes in temperature, rapid temperature change, freezing, mechanical damage, and exposure to rain or flowing water. All materials and equipment needed for adequate curing and protection shall be available and at the site of the placement prior to the start of grout placement. After completion of any strip or panel, no workman or other load shall be permitted on the grouted surface for a period of twenty-four (24) hours. Exposed surfaces shall be kept continuously moist for the entire period, or until curing compound is applied. Preservation of moisture for grout surfaces shall be accomplished by one of the following methods:
a. Continuous sprinkling and ponding.
b. Application of absorptive mats or fabrics kept continuously wet.
c. Application of impervious sheet material conforming to ASTM C171.
d. Application of membrane-forming curing compound conforming to ASTM C309. The compound shall be sprayed on the moist surface as soon as free water has disappeared but shall not be applied to any surface until finishing of that surface is completed.
