Text version

Portage Lakefront Park, Ecosystem Restoration, Section 125 W912P6-14-R-0023 applied in a single operation. Hydraulic seeding equipment must include a pump rated and operated at no less than 100 gal/min and no less than 100 lb/2in pressure. The tank must have a mechanical agitator powerful enough to keep the seed in a uniform suspension in the water.

2.2.4.2 Broadcast Seeders

If mechanical in nature, such as drawn behind a tractor, must provide uniform flow and a uniform coverage of area to be seeded. Drill seeding is not allowed.

2.2.4.3 Drill Seeder

No drill seeding.

2.2.4.4 Roller

After seeding, seeds may be lightly raked into ground and then a roller with 100-220 lbs per roller width of uniform pressure should be rolled across seeded area to firmly press seeds into contact with the soil.

2.3 LIVE PLANT MATERIAL

2.3.1 Variety & Origin

All planting stock must be nursery propagated in accordance with good horticultural practice. All plant material must be in good condition at time of delivery, free from insects, disease, weeds, fungi, bacterial discoloration, deformities, signs of desiccation, wind or frost injury and weak stems.

If adequeate quantities of certain species are not commercially available, these species may be harvested from on-site populations. On-site harvest protocols must follow the 1/3 rules. Only 1/3 of any one plant's production of seeds may be harvested and no more than 1/3 of total seeds produced from any one population may be harvested.

2.3.2 Plant Size

Plant plugs should be at least 2.5 inch pots, the standard plug container, with dimensions of 2.5 inch X 2.5 inch square X 3.5 deep or 2.25" in diameter and 4.75" deep or 2" in diameter and 5" deep and have well developed root systems filling the soil but not be overly root bound or larger must be acceptable. Plant tops should be well developed, healthy, viable, and adequately hardened off for outdoor planting. Plug planting soil should be inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi at the nursery at time of seeding. Rootstock plant materials will have the same minimum dimensions of rootstock as specified above for plugs. Minimum sizes measured after pruning and with branches in normal position, must conform to measurements indicated, based on the average width or height of the plant for the species as specified in ANSI Z60.1. Plants larger in size than specified may be provided with approval of the Contracting Officer. When larger plants are provided, increase the ball of earth or spread of roots in accordance with ANSI Z60.1. Two year old plants (plants that have undergone one full growing season prior to the year they are to be installed) are required. The Contractor must identify plants that are not two years old for approval from the COR. Oak (Quercus sp) trees must be between 1.5" to 2.0" caliper (trunk diameter). All other trees and shrubs must be in #5 nursery gallon pots or larger or in root bags between 18" to 24" in diameter.
