AMENDMENT 0001

W912P522B0005- Amendment 0001 Moccasin Bend Streambank Stabilization

Chattanooga, TN Questions and Answers

1. Question: Can the contractor achieve clearing operation by machine (by means of mechanical mulching). If the contractor can use such machine from the barge?

(Reference Specification Section 31 11 00 clearing shall be done by hand clearing and all stumps must be trimmed to all for geotextile. And grubbing will not be permitted)

Answer: No, the vegetation must be cleared by hand. This is a condition of the Section 106 MOA and ensures minimal impacts to archaeological deposits and allows the archaeological monitor to view the vegetation removal.

2. Question: Will the contractor be able to place riprap stone up to grade on a 100yd section and then begin clearing another 100yd section?

(Reference Drawing 64/42, Note 6 Clearing Operations shall not extend more than 100 yards or nor impede the placement of geotextile and stone protection)

Answer: Yes, this is acceptable.

3. Question: Typically for this application it is specified as the 400lb riprap. Is 3,000lb riprap required? If so what station number does that gradation apply?

(Reference Line Item 0017, list 3,000lb Gradation Riprap)

Answer: This is incorrect. The gradations are to be the gradation table provided in the spec (D100 = 400 lbs) for 60% of the rock being placed on site. The other 40% of rock being placed is to weigh between 2000lb and 3000lb and is to be concentrated at the toe of the repair throughout. This requirement is in 35 31 19 at the end of section 2.3.1.

4. Question: When excavating the toe trench can the excavated material for the trench be left on the river bottom in front of the toe trench?

Answer: No, the soil needs to be inspected and placing it in the river is a water quality concern.
